Deadly drug overdoses in the United States declined last year for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, new preliminary federal data show.

The big picture: It's a rare glimmer of positive news amid a drug epidemic that's gripped the nation for over two decades and still continues to kill over 100,000 people each year.

By the numbers: Drug overdose deaths fell 3% from 111,029 in 2022 to 107,543 last year, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But deaths from cocaine and stimulants like methamphetamine continued to tick up, as they are increasingly mixed with fentanyl, creating a new wave in the evolving drug epidemic. About 1 in 3 fatal overdoses last year involved stimulants, while just over 1 in 4 involved cocaine.

Some states had dramatic annual decreases in overdose deaths, with drops of more than 15% recorded in Indiana, Nebraska, Kansas and Maine.

While fentanyl took longer to move to the western part of the country, those states are now seeing some of the sharpest year-over-year increases in overdose deaths. Alaska, Oregon and Washington state all had increases of at least 27%.

Or they just reported it as something else like they do other crimes.

Meh, how much of this is due to lack of reporting? Just like the crime stats. I know here in Jefferson County, AL overdose deaths in 2023 were off the charts. Several times what they were just a few years prior. It’s horrific, and I doubt Jefferson County is an outlier on this.

And with our state banning the sale of THC vapes and gummies, etc, you can bet they’ll be a lot less next year

If enough junkies OD and do NOT get treated then the stats will drop even more and furthermore, without Narcan they'll not be repeat OD offenders.

I say this as a prescription opioid addict. Every month I get 90 hydrocodone. Stop treating OD's as a disease and treat it as a lifestyle choice!

I hope this is true and continues to fall. I have never understand the use of drugs. Never. I don't get it. I don't understand the appeal to start.

I had a cousin in his 20s dealing with the depression and got into it after his girlfriend tragically died (he was driving her on some backwoods in TN and a drunk driver hit him - he got hurt, she got killed). He couldn't cope. Went to Oxford, MS where I lived at the time to the drug and rehab....spent over $25k between there and the midway house in OR only to come home and be found ODd one morning.

Addiction is a real thing and it is awful. I am very opposed to the legalization of drugs in any form and hope this is something that maintains its spotlight as a fix government needs to help our citizens on.

It is and unfortunately alcohol kills more people than all the other drugs combined on a yearly basis but that never gets any love.

Sid, that's hell on your liver baw. Hopefully the doc can get you prescribed something without so much acetaminophen. Good luck.

I mean assuming the stat reporting is accurate (and as with most things it probably is not) then there is a logical explanation for a decline: the pool of potential victims has been reduced by previous OD deaths.

There are only so many drug addicts out there. The more that die, the fewer remain to die during the next statistical cycle.

In other words, we aren't really fixing the root problem. We're just celebrating the fact that there are fewer people on earth using fentanyl because a lot of them already died from fentanyl.

The availability of buprenorphine products from pharmacies has helped. The mindset on that is shifting, and it is a good thing to see.

Are they measuring OD"s or OD deaths? Looks like deaths.

Maybe the number of OD's have not gone down BUT maybe it's because Narcan is available OTC since March of 23? Less OD's are fatal?

There are also free Fentanyl test strips at some gas stations. I noticed them a while back. Maybe some junkies are actually using them.

I don't take 90/month that's for sure. Lately, since I had a psychedelic experience with medpot, my pain is a LOT better. Only a couple times a week and usually not more than 2/day do I take pain meds. (exception was couple weeks after surgery)

But yeah, they added acetaminophen to opioids to try to quell OD's while the results ended up a lot more liver failure cases.

I'm shocked they weren't all counted as COVID deaths.

I was on a 50mccg/hour fentanyl patch for 2 years and quit them cold turkey when the whole NELA area ran out at year end after Aron’s Pharmacy sold and had to relicense with the DEA. They caused a chain reaction with all the nursing homes they supplied scrounging for all narcotics for the old folks.

My hydrocodone is at a higher dosage than most too. But even with those meds they jump straight to dilaudid when I get to the ER. Sometimes they dose me before they can even get me signed in, well before lab draws.

But I have never abused opiates knowing since early childhood there are alternatives to get high that are not as badly addictive. Simply, don’t abuse opiates, it’s not rocket science, the most hood of idiots can figure it out.
