You see a lot more requirements for higher octane due to higher compression and lower displacement.
In addition, every manufacturer is trying to run as lean as possible to lower emissions.
Lastly, everybody is using thinner and thinner engine oils ( even 0wt) due to super-close internal manufacturing tolerances.
All of those factors contribute to a requirement for higher-octane fuel, as well as the higher performance factor.
