are both in real danger of not making the tournament this year. Both were in the preseason top 4 in every poll. Both are 11-17 in the SEC with 2 games left. Florida doesn’t even have a winning overall record as of today. Has this ever happened? Is this the effects of NIL/portal?

more like the championships were

Thurston and Skenes were bulwarks of our teams

but also you need experienced players and we both lost a lot of them.

same reason MSU and OM fell off after their championships.

combine that with a pretty strong conference

Well, we are doing a lot better in year 1 after a championship than MSU or Ole Miss did in their first season after.

NIL/Portal definitely played a huge role in this since SEC is more competitive than ever. Another factor is the shortened MLB draft and more high school players are making it to college than Minor league.

In this environment, you need veteran and MLB caliber players to win consistently in the SEC, which both team had last year, and each had a huge gap to fill after those players left.

We were both stacked as frick last year. When you shed that much talent, you are bound to have a drop off. While it is interesting, it isn't unique to see teams win the natty then have a drop off.

The Mississippi teams didn't do well the year after their championships either. I would have hoped we'd do better, but it's a whole new world after you lose a lot of the players that got you there.

In 2017 the same 2 teams played for the natty. The following year 2018 Florida won 20 SEC games and won the East division. LSU was 15-15 in the SEC. Florida was a top 8 seed. LSU was a 2 seed at Oregon St. A drop off is one thing, but teams seem to be falling off of a cliff in the post NIL/portal era.

Sometimes when you really dislike something, you see signs of it everywhere. I think attributing the drop off to NIL is just tilting at windmills. Our team was incredible last year and the major players left.

Case closed.

It’s hard to just restock to that level.

We aren’t talking about restocking to another CWS. We’re talking about making the NCAA tournament

I can't speak for Florida, but LSU lost 7 of their top 9 position players and arguably their 5 best pitchers.

Rebuilding years happen in college sports.

LSU also isn't that bad this year. We're an above average pitching team and average hitting team. Florida has the worst pitching staff in the conference and is a below average hitting team. LSU quite frankly hasn't made plays when it's mattered most. There's about 5 losses on the conference schedule that just should not have been losses. LSU could very easily be looking at a top 8 seed if they don't blow games they had no business of blowing.

We currently have 11 wins. You could make an argument that LSU easily could have won Florida game 2, Arkansas game 2 and 3 (White was about a foot away from taking the lead in game 3 with 2 outs), Vandy game 2, Mizzou game 2, Alabama games 1 and 3. That's 7 games. That would put LSU fighting for 20 wins this weekend.

On the flip side, I genuinely can't think of a game that we've "gotten away with" outside of Maybe Mississippi State game 2 when we blew the big lead. That's just how thin the margins are in the SEC.

Due to the Covid season being cancelled there has not been a champion make the post season the following year since like 2017-2018.

And the runner up to last year is in real danger of missing as well. Pretty incredible.

And we’re not talking about Coastal Carolina here. These are 2 SEC powerhouses.

Going into this weekend LSU had the 5th best team ERA, 3rd best batting average against, and 2nd most strikeouts in the SEC. That's what I would call above average to good pitching. It's very easy to lose sight of things when your team plays in the SEC.

In losing Crews, Beloso, Dugas, Morgan, Thompson and Jobert, the team lost 85 HR's, experienced and clutch hitters, not to mention all the leadership. That is very hard to replace. Throw in Skenes, Floyd and Cooper on the pitching side and you damn near depleted the team.

LSU is playing much better down the stretch, certain people are beginning to consistently step up. Right now if we had hurd and guidry doing what we thought they would do, we would be a CWS threat.

If they can somehow sweep OM, I believe they get in. I would hate to be the 1 and 2 seed in whatever Region they go.

Teams that play until mid June get behind the portal 8 ball. Coaches are worried about the next game in the tournament and can’t focus on portal players.

Lsus biggest problems are:

Replacing skenes 7-9 innings each weekend while Hurd digressed. Staff stretched thin.

Replacing crews, beloso, Joubert timely hitting with freshmen while Kling digressed.
