What are your thoughts on the first president of LSU?

No, that’s not a typo.

War criminal, but likely did what was necessary to end the war for his side. A true conqueror willing to do whatever it took to destroy his enemies. Not someone I admire, but someone I respect.

How old (dumb) are you?

Everyone knows that the 1st LSU president was WTS and that he led the union army through GA. He hated the idea of war and wished the South hadn't pursued it. But he fought for the USA and was a winner.

I love the great state of Louisiana, but frick GA.

Everybody knows about his Civil War exploits. Less well known is that he presided over the destruction of the Plains Indians, using tactics explicitly designed to starve them onto reservations.

OTOH he was instrumental in restarting LSU after the war, donating books from his own collection for the library.

He allowed his men to rape a lot of women, including black slaves, but many people like that. Not my thing

If I could go back in time .... it wouldn't be to witness the crucifixion of Jesus or be in the perfect spot in the stands to catch Babe Ruth's last dinger ball. It would be to kidnap Sherman outside of his camp in South Georgia, drag him into the woods and draw and quarter his arse him and then drop pieces of him all over his camp among his yankees. Then I'd take his head and drop it in Lincoln's bed while he is sleeping, Godfather horsehead style.

From “The Useless Indians” by your idol:
quote:

Sherman said, "we must act with vindictive earnestness against the Sioux, even to their extermination, men, women, and children." And one year later he issued an order permitting the Sioux's "utter annihilation."

quote:

Sherman believed Indians should be punished for their atrocities, put on reservations, and forced to stay there.

quote:

Beginning in the late 1860s, he organized the killing of some 5 million bison in an effort to drive the creatures to the brink of extinction. Sherman continued his harsh policies after becoming commanding general of the army in 1869, and by the 1870s, he had helped force most of the Plains peoples onto reservations.

quote:

By aggressively killing the buffalo and attacking Indian encampments during the winter, he weakened his enemy when their supplies and mobility were limited.

quote:

the general’s bizarre behavior eventually found its way into the papers, some of which labeled him insane. Sherman requested to be relieved from his position in early November 1861

He only came to LSU after failing at banking in California.

Oh how I love the high and mighty.
