Sitting on a SL I got years ago and would like to start a new build. Been a hot minute since my last build and can't remember all the places to shop/keep an eye on. Any deals would be appreciated.
ETA: My last build was a little more robust.
RRA SL
Palmetto LPK
BCM BCG
Cold Rolled Steel 16" 7:1 Upper with Troy Picayune Rail and flash guard
This time I'd like to go super light on everything. Smaller, shorter, closer range.
Optics: Red Dot or ACOG

Looks awesome... but also too expensive for my blood. Ha.
How difficult it it to swap out a rail on an upper?

An Acog isn’t the best for close up. You would much better off with a red dot or a LVPO

I'd like a low powered scope red do combo.
Need a LPK and the tools to start

Someone give me info on 7.62x39 and AR's.
If running a 7.62x39 complete upper on a standard mil-spec lower then you need dedicated magazines. C-products. D&H and others make them. From what I understand, depending on the gun it may take some experimentation with different mags to find something that works reliably.
Alternatively you can get the modified AR lowers that accept AK style magazines. PSA has some available as of yesterday.
I've read that and enhanced firing pin (slightly longer) can help with light primer strikes on cheap steel cased ammo.

Just, checking in..bought an IWI this week. Haven’t put Any rounds through it yet, but I’m pretty stoked about it. Wife is perplexed that I’m still buying shite to mod it.

The handguard? Not terrible. Need to have the tools to remove the barrel nut on the current and replace with the one the the new upper comes with.
The main three tools you’ll need:
Upper vise block
Torque wrench
Barrel wrench that fits your current barrel nut.

$200 for a stripped lower? Jesus Christ. I can’t imagine how stupid things are going to get when Biden first mentions gun control.

He'll probably appoint Beto as his gun confiscation czar.

They have Anderson stripped lowers for $47.99 if you are a “just as good” type of guy/gal.

They still got aero lowers for $75, then you have to pay the transfer fee.

Where do you see the Aero Lowers online?

There are folks that sell polymer lowers, and you could probably 3-d print one that would last you a couple of magazines worth. A lower is probably the best major component that’s “just as good as” in the entire rifle.

Got a build question for you experts. After building a few ARs (15s and 10s) I seem to run into a common issue: the gas tube alignment. I read posts in forums where you have guys saying “when it’s properly aligned the key should basically not contact the tube” well...I’ve never been lucky enough to experience that. What am I doing wrong? My carrier key doesn’t knock against the tube but definitely has some resistance when it makes contact. Do I bend the tube after the fact for better alignment?

Yes, I only ran into this once with one of those V7 extreme environment tubes (they are noticeably thicker than a conventional tube). If you slide your bcg in you can see which way it is deviating upon contacting the tube. Get a long flathead and go through the rear of your upper receiver, where the bcg is inserted. Bend it towards the opposite direction of the deviation. May take a few times, but it’ll get smooth as butter.
ETA: forgot to mention, but do this with the carrier only (remove the bolt)
