Natchez, Mississippi by Jack Daniel
I live in Natchez and have never ever heard someone say they are deathly afraid of the mayor. The garden society ruins this city way more than the mayor.

I’ve only been down on Silver Street (?) by the river. What is the downtown like? Do they still do the Spring Pilgrimage? How about the bar/restaurant scene?

Yes, spring and fall pilgrimage.

No real bar scene other than a few local restaurant bars.

There are several local restaurants that are pretty decent. Roux 61 is one restaurant that I would stack up against any place, it’s reallg good.

Crime is ridiculous there from what I’m told. Natchez used to be a nice little place to go, but has gone down in recent years.

Too far out. They need more restaurants like that closer to the town center.

Wow. That's a beautiful house. Owners must really want to unload it. Could easily be converted to a B&B or VRBO if the garden society allows it.

That Worley fella lost Dunleith to bankruptcy. Probably dragging the whole market down.

Downtown has some pretty eating spots. I really like cotton alley. Pearl street pasta is good. The pig out inn is solid bbq. Decent sushi place downtown. Mediterranean place opening soon. A couple of the plantation homes have good restaurants attached. Down on silver street the magnolia grill and the camp are solid.

Not a whole lot of Bar options. Bowies tavern and smoots can be a lot of fun with a good group. Under the hill saloon and casino is late night spots

Spent the weekend there last spring and taking the horse drawn carriage tour, saw numerous properties for sale. At least one on every block.

The only thing that house has going for it is the porch and entrance way/stairway

Anyone know why real estate would plummet so much there?

Seems like every other house in town is for sale, especially downtown. Washington street is one of the most beautiful streets in the entire world, I’m sure of it.

And culcha isn’t the issue. When everything is for sale, nothing is worth a shite.

They make such a big of the Old South Confederate heritage. Their whole tourism industry is built around it. Ironically, the reason all that stuff is still intact is because they surrendered without firing a shot as soon as the Yankees showed up.

Natchez has become a violent ghetto town. There have been multiple shootings in the last couple of years. There is one public high school- Natchez High School, and it is a terrible place to send your kids. Your only other options are Cathedral or ACCS. Trinity was the third private school, but it closed recently because their enrollment was way down. Natchez is beautiful in some areas, but 80% of the city is a dump. It's a terrible combination of old money and ghetto

I’d also recommend Biscuits and Blues for atmosphere and the steak. King’s Tavern is pretty awesome, makes killer cocktails, and also has the Charboneau Distillery next door which does tours and makes award winning rum.

The Natchez Brewery is actually really good. They’ve got a broad selection of beer types (not just IPA) and a great location to just mosey on over to Smoots after they close.

Tour the houses, the cemetery, and the downtown (preferably by carriage) and if you’re feeling really adventurous I’d suggest heading north to the Windsor Ruins or west to Frogmore Plantation. Both are pretty neat experiences.

Crime is a big concern of mine. We’re not looking to live there full time, but the other really big issue is the fact the closest airport is pretty far. I’m guessing either Jackson or Baton Rouge unless someone knows of something closer.
There are lots of places like this where real estate is very depressed because there are no jobs close by. It seems (at least to me) job concentration has increased so much that jobs are extremely plentiful in some places and non existent in others.

Award winning rum if the award is for most disgusting shite ever created. It’s not fit for human consumption. I know the folks that own it and they are good people, but I couldn’t choke that shite down to save a school bus full of children.
