“Randomly” assigned to Judge Trudy White. As long as Lamont is willing to pay, she will let him play. Interesting how certain types of cases or cases from certain shysters always seem to land in front of Judy and Janice, the true bastions of honor on the bench of the 19th JDC.

Trudy making the call to do nothing strengthens the chances that a similar disqualification case against a mayor-President candidate gets tossed.

This case and the Watson case are very different. Both are suits to disqualify candidates, but the issues involved are entirely different.

I believe there are only 2-3 civil judges, which means a high chance Trudy gets the case since she just transferred from criminal to civil in the past year or so.

Wonder if Gravy will show up to the next council meeting to cancel Lamont.

It's 7. there are 15 total judges at the 19th (not counting commissioners). 8 criminal, 7 civil. I think most lawyers who frequently file down there know well they have a 1/7th chance of getting any of the particular judges.

Lamont, you big dummy.

First thing that I thought. I would give her my vote if Judge Trudy would say that to him in court!

Making no judgments on their abilities, Trudy and Janice are two of seven judges. That's roughly 29% of the civil bench at the 19th JDC. Add in all of your standard observation biases, and I imagine you simply notice those 29% more than others

In case anyone is curious, this is the local rule for how civil cases are allotted in the 19th:

quote:

The Clerk of Court, or a person designated by him and under his immediate supervision, shall, upon
the filing of any new civil proceeding and the payment of all costs chargeable thereto, immediately
and publicly allot same to a Division of the Civil Court in a manner and by the use of a mechanical or
electronic device to insure the equal assignment by chance and by lot, among the Divisions of the
Civil Court, of all such civil filings of whatever nature or character. The method of allotment shall be
subject to the direct supervision of the Clerk of Court and shall at all times protect the integrity of the
mandate that over any given period of time each judge of the Civil Court shall be assigned an equal
number of cases of the same type and the individual allotment shall be by pure chance among all the
Civil Divisions, without any exceptions whatsoever.

In theory, this should be Janice's last year due to age cap right?

A judge ruled Thursday that Councilman LaMont Cole is eligible to run for reelection after a lawsuit challenging his candidacy claimed he no longer lives in the district he represents on the East Baton Rouge Metro Council — though the decision will likely face an appeal.

After an hour-long hearing in the 19th Judicial District Court, Judge Trudy White determined that Cole is, in fact, a resident of District 7, which covers much of Mid City and portions of north Baton Rouge stretching from Interstate 10 to Evangeline Street.

They say Cole currently resides at 438 Bellewood Drive, which is located one block outside of the district's boundaries.

This makes it sound frivolous. But then:

How does that make it sound frivolous?

You either live within the district boundaries or you don't.

One block? Who cares?

Cole improperly listed his domicile address (at an address in the district which is) "an abandoned property without working electricity"

Happened recently in my neck of the nape. Guy had a house on the north side claimed it as his residence, built a 400K house on the south side on the new golf course. Claimed he lives in the 45K dump on the north side, lost the seat he held. Lost his elected position and is butthurt as hell.

The Advocate

quote:

The petition challenging Cole’s residency was filed on Monday by Gwendolyn and Tom Stone, both constituents of District 7. Their lawsuit claims Cole resides at 438 Bellewood Drive, a house one block outside the district's boundaries purchased in 2017 for $375,000.

quote:

Cole testified Thursday that while he does own the house, only his wife and two children live there. He said he instead spends four to five nights a week sleeping at 665 N. 39th St. — a property he rents for $500 a month and which he listed as his residence when he qualified to run for reelection.

Look up these two properties on Google Maps.

That makes it clear why he would stay in the rented property...
