If so, how do you get warranty service on them? I'm looking at a 2017 shimano exsence dc, it's. $600 jdm reel and I don't want to waste my money on it if I can't repair it if need be. It's basically a saltwater rated anteres DC flagship reel, so there is no comparable usdm reel.

That's a waste of money seeing as how you can buy them for around $300

2017 Shimano Exsence DC HG is essentially shimanos flagship saltwater DC baitcaster. It is the saltwater version of shimanos top end freshwater only Antares DC. It has the top of the line 4x8 DC breaks for 32 levels of breaking options including the auto monitoring mode, and every maxed out feature shimano has on their baitcasters. This reel can be bought new for $580-$600

2020 Shimano Exsence DC SS is essentially a Curado DC with a few specifically designed features for saltwater anglers and better color scheme. It only has the IDC-4 controller which only has 4 breaking modes and no auto monitoring mode. This reel is can be bought for about $300.
2020 Exsence DC SS
The difference between these two is the difference in the flagship Antares and the mid level Curado.

When I buy them, I count on them either never needing repair, or doing it myself.

Are you able to reasonably find parts if you need them? I do my own maintenance and repairs for theost part, but it's easy to get USDM parts. Whereas I don't know anything about getting JDM parts or if they can be recieved in a reasonable amount of time.

Gotcha. Seems like getting parts from Japan online wouldn't be too much of an issue. Professional sport shop in New Orleans does shimano reel repair and would be worth a call to see if they can get the parts or make any necessary repairs.

So far, I have not needed to.

Japantackle.com will take care of all your JDM reel needs form Shimano and Daiwa. If the reel was originally purchased through them, even better!

On average, I spend about $50/year on maintenance. I have some calcuttas that are nearly 30 years old that I am just retiring (I ordered two SLX's last week to replace)

Most JDM Shimano reels have the same parts as the US versions. I have a few Aldebaran's, and they are pretty much the same as the Core's.

You wanna break your reel and help a guy out lol?!?!

I use professional sports for my penn reels and superior bait and tackle for my shimano since I'm out of denham springs. Superior said they can repair it under the table, but they are not allowed to buy jdm parts because of their contract with Shimano US, shimano JP won't sell them the parts even if they wanted to. I'm assuming it would be the same for professional since they are also a licensed shimano dealer.

Like others have said I pretty much hope and pray that an annual service at Superior Tackle will suffice. I bought a JDM Antares a few years back that I paid around $300 for. Thing was a tank of a reel but for some reason the spool got wobbly, the only spools available online were around $125. Makes the JDM market a real catch 22 when it comes to quality over accessibility.

How did you know it was the spool, observation or superior told you what the problem was? Did you buy the spool? If so, did it fix your problem?
