Other posters are correct about hills: the only way to train for them properly is to ride hills. But here is drill that is good for hills- find some type of circular or there-and-back route. We used to do this in Audubon Park during low traffic hours, and it is a 1.8 mile loop, so perfect. Remove your saddle and seat post. Put the bike in a low gear and stand-up on the pedals and start pedaling. Go as far as you can and if you need to rest, just stand up on the pedals until you can pedal again. Not having your saddle is great motivation to keep going. Fransesco Mosier did this drill while training to break the world one hour ride record, except he was going uphill. Good luck!

interesting approach.. i'm going to stick to training methods that involve a saddle though.

Yea i saw that video…. All my road setups are 30-32 except for that TT bike that I have to run 25s on.
Weekend races are over.. finished with the sprinters in the road race yesterday but couldn’t do a good sprint since i’d been fighting cramps for the last 10 miles, ended up 10th. 40k TT was this morning. Got 2nd with 55:40.

Thanks man. Power was a bit lower than target but paced it well. Without the fatigue in the legs from Saturday probably could have gone sub 55. I ran it with a 60mm on the front vs the 85mm widow maker lol. The 85mm was probably worth a few seconds as well. Happy with it though…

Finally bought a drop bar bike. I've been waiting for a cheap road bike to pop up on FB marketplace. Really wanted an old 90s lemond or lite speed or lugged steel Bianchi. Then this 2015 Crux pops up for $400. Will put 38mm slick gravel tires to run it both gravel and road so it will be a little more versatile for me than a straight up road bike. Did a quick 14 mile ride as a shake down. Then a 2nd 13 mile ride with lots of stops as I concentrated on bike fit. The stem originally came at +12 degrees. I now have it set for -4. I'm 5'8" with a really long torso and really short legs. Usually a 54 will be too tall with a reach bordering on top short. This one felt a little longer than most 54s I've tried so the fit is great. Only thing it needs is a little grip tape. Must be kismit I have a Leyzene road drive pump I bought several years ago cause it was in a clearance bin at a bike shop for $10. Matches the bike perfectly.
