Where did the kosher salt go?

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I can't seem to find it in the stores.

I found some at fresh market. Couldn’t find it at a “regular” grocery store. Idk what the deal is.

You must shop at Rouses. It’s like they stopped carrying it.

I’ve found a few boxes at Winn Dixie and Albertsons, but if you have a Restaurant Depot near you they always have tons. If you don’t have a membership just go in and ask them for a day pass.

Bought some at Whole Foods, but it’s way too coarse. I want the finer flaky style that Morton made that has all seemingly gone poof.

Gone, no idea why. The last couple boxes of Morton's I bought was the same texture as table salt too. I switched to Manischewitz from Amazon.

Thank you for saying this. My current box of Morton is so fine. I’ve been using it for years and this is the first time it’s been so fine.

We had a thread on this recently. I and others noted that Morton Kosher had been small and grainy for a time. Much poorer quality/texture than a few years ago.

I have switched to Diamond Crystal, ordered from Amazon.

Could t find Morton’s here in Bham either. Ended up with some off brand I’d never heard of.

I worked in the Salt industry for many years. The plant I worked at made and sold Kosher salt to Wholesale customers whose product sometimes made it to the grocery store shelves.

This plant sold salt to supply many different markets and customers. Salt was bagged or sold in bulk and shipped by the 18 wheeler or railroad box car loads. The salt was sold to food supplier, baking industry, Pharmaceutical and oil field industry. The products produced ranged from "flour" size grains to water softener pellets.

And guess what --- all the product in the bags was exactly the same, 99.9% NaCl. Maybe shape or appearance was a little different, ie. the salt for Pretzels was made coarser. The iodized salt was the only product that had chemicals added to it other than an anti caking agent to keep the salt from forming lumps.

So what makes the salt Kosher? The simple answer is money. To be considered Kosher, the salt must be "Blessed" by a Rabbi. Supposedly the manufacturing processes must meet the Churches "kosher" laws to be considered Kosher. The Rabbi also receive a nice Check for the short visit to the plant each year.

To sell salt to the food industry, the plant must pass the American Baking Industry standards. This annual certification process is very long list of requirements and very detailed plant inspection, to insure the product is safe to eat. The Pharmaceutical standards are even stricter as far as product purity.

FIY.... of all the salt manufacturing processes, Sea Salt has the lowest purity. Think of polluted sea water, dust in the air, seagulls and bulldozes in the evaporator ponds that takes months and months to finally harvest the salt.

I buy Walmart brand table salt and animal rock salt for boiling. I still have a little flour salt from when I worked at the salt plant. I put it on popcorn when I make it during LSU sports events. It covers the kernels much better than table salt. No microwave popcorn for me.

So tell me why you pay a much higher price to buy salt that says Kosher on the container?

1. If you follow recipes send try to substitute 1 tablespoon of table salt in place of 1 tablespoon of kosher salt, you'll be adding too much salt.

Salt one quality steak with Morton’s Kosher salt and another quality steak with Morton’s Sea salt of the same coarseness 5 hours before cooking it and get back to me. One will dissolve and one won’t.

Better yet, take Morton’s rock salt, pulverize it a bit, and put it on a steak.

Same salt though. Sure.

Chemically though they’re generally the same. Sea salt may have certain naturally occurring compounds, which kosher salt won’t.

Also, kosher salt isn’t always a kosher food, despite what the previous poster said.
