vs LHP
1) Milam-2B
2) Larson-RF
3) White-3B
4) Jones-1B
5) Travinski-DH
6) Braswell-SS
7) Bingham-LF
8) Milazzo-C
9) Kling-CF

vs RHP
1) Milam-2B
2) Larson-RF
3) White-3B
4) Jones-1B
5) Pearson-LF
6) Travinski-DH
7) Neal-C
8) Braswell-SS

Play these lineups the next 2 series then if any of the following get hot keep them in the lineup: Bingham, Pearson, Brown, Kling, Neal or Milazzo

Ashton Laarson is hitting .365 with a .440 OBP in conference. Steven Milam is hitting .235 with a .284 OBP in conference.

Why would you take Larson out of the leadoff spot?

I want Larson leading off against RHP and LHP and any ambidextrous unicorn. That’s his spot now

Monster had a great weekend, but even after those stats are added in, his SEC OB% is .311. I love watching him play, but he is not a leadoff hitter. Before this weekend, Kling had a higher SEC and season OB%. Kling is still higher for the season and barely behind for SEC. To be clear, I'm not advocating Kling in the leadoff spot, I'm using him for reference. Milam is doing just fine where he is.

Larson looked more comfortable in 2 hole and I think Milam was just born to be a lead off hitter!

I don't think Pearson leaves the lineup the next 2 series, Jay absolutely trusts Pearson in clutch situations.

I like Larson leading off and if Jay puts Kling back in CF, hitting 9th. If Kling gets OB, Larson can move him and follow up with Tommy and Bear.

I agree that Larson is a natural 2 hole and Milam is a natural leadoff, but as freshman, they are playing their current roles as well as they possibly could.

Next year, they're likely the 1-2 hitters in the order. Right now, let's not fix what isn't broken.

Pearson deserves to be in the line up just as much as anyone at the current.

Larson leads off every game.
Pearson stays in the lineup.
Milam stays where he is at in the lineup
Milazzo starts first 2 games, and possibly the 3rd

After this past weekend, you can't take Pearson out no matter what arm is throwing. If Bingham had been crushing the ball lately, sure. But even in that scenario he's probably playing CF instead of Kling/Brown.

5 years ago, absolutely. I've always liked a LHH in the 2 hole to potentially pull a ground ball to the right side if the leadoff doubles or gets on a swipes 2nd to get him to 3rd with 1 out at worst, but a good enough bat-to-ball guy that a ground ball to the right side isn't just a sacrifice and could be barreled up for an RBI single.

However, we've seen lineups constructed differently the last several years. I think it started in MLB (maybe when the NL went to the DH in in 2020 and just more data became available were part of the reasons), but a lot of teams started putting their best hitters in the 2-hole, guys that would traditionally have been 3-hole guys. Or even at leadoff if they have speed and don't strike out a lot and have high OBP%s. Acuna, Betts, Crews his 1st couple of years at LSU are examples.

But you saw Jay really embrace Crews as his best hitter in the 2-hole last year, and he likes Tommy there this year. That's become pretty common-place now. And I don't have the data in front of me to prove how much it actually happens, but I'm sure it's about giving your best hitters more ABs throughout the season (more likely to get 5 ABs in a game instead of 4 the higher you are). But maybe more importantly, it's to make sure your best 3 hitters all are guaranteed to hit in the 1st inning, giving you the best chance to score 1st. And so I think Jay is pretty settled on White in the 2-hole and Jones in the 3-hole, while 3-4 years ago, White would be in the 3-hole with Jones cleaning up.

And with Larson's ability to put the bat on the ball, spray it to all fields, have really competitive ABs, and get on base, he's probably the perfect guy to lead off and set up Tommy and Bear. Right now, I think the top 5 for the rest of the season is likely to be:

1) Larson
2) White
3) Jones
4) Pearson
5) Travinski

Even if Trav goes on a heater, I don't think Jay would put 3 RHHs in a row to have him hit cleanup. Probably why Braswell is not really an option at leadoff as well as long as White and Jones are settled in at 2-3. This lineup is not long enough this year to have guys in "traditional" spots, and Jay really values alternating LHH and RHH when he can, thinking about high leverage matchups in the later innings.

But Jay hit Beloso leadoff in Game 3 of the championship series last year, and tried Bear at leadoff for a while this year, so I don't think he's really married to anything. He may even flip Larson and Pearson at some point. He wants to give his team the best chance to score in the 1st and to give his best hitters the best chance at having the most ABs that particular day.

And as great as it would be if Milam was hitting well enough to hit lead-off as a switch hitter, if the lineup rolls over and we're down by 1 in the 9th in a must-win game, you can't have him come up with the game on the line while Larson is sitting further down in the lineup and may not get a chance. Not this year, anyway. Especially when they could bring in a lefty and turn him around to hit right-handed (although he's gotten much better from that side as the season has progressed) and we don't have many (any?) guys on the bench you can really trust right now to come in and PH.

But a lot can change in the next month. Some guys step up when the lights get brighter. We saw it last year. But that offense was crazy deep with guys who had done it before. We're probably gonna need a couple of Kling, Neal, Bingham, and a couple of pitchers that we're not really able to count on right now to turn it on to make a serious run deep into the postseason (assuming we make it). Only problem is will they even have the opportunities left to gain that trust. It's not likely, but we'll see. That's part of what makes late season college baseball so exciting. Just get in and anything can happen.

The best hitter in the 2-hole is about getting more ABs, but it’s also to avoid the possibility of your best hitter coming up with 2 outs and the bases empty in the first inning, which would happen 35-40% of the time or more depending on the OBP of the first two batters.
