Huge break-through for the program. They had Ben McDonald and other stars and they had the legend, Skip Bertman. Maybe they can win another historic series this weekend.

Yep 1989, and A$M was ranked #1.

Pat Garrity with a big hit if I remember correctly, which is highly doubtful.

From the Advocate link posted above...

"LSU won that final game in wild fashion. Pinch hitter Pat Garrity, a .211 hitter who had less than 40 at-bats that season, hit an RBI double off the right-field wall to drive in what proved to be the game-winner."

I remember that well. That was before the games were on television, but I was riveted to the radio listening to Jim Hawthorne.

They also beat them in a super regional in 2004.

Yep. It was all on the line and what does Bertman do? Pinch hits a 211, end of the bench hitter. I was incredulous. He was giving the game away. And then…it happened. It was one of those nights I’ll never forget; very similar to Morgan’s play at the plate to hold off Wake Forest.

Bertman made so many correct calls in his career that I wondered if he had sold his soul to the devil. He was one of a kind.

I was there. My brother is an Aggie and we were there for the whole regional. Listened to the Aggies plan their trip to Omaha all week. When LSU won the LSU section (very small then, mostly family) were leaning over and the players were jumping up and giving us high fives. So cool. I got a cup of ice in the back of my neck from an Aggie fan, but didn’t care. I was so happy that night I couldn’t sleep. Probably my favorite LSU memory.

Sat in my truck and listened to it on WWL 17 years old. Went to Omaha for first time that year.

Didn’t Skip put Ben in left field so he could come back to pitch if he needed to?

While it was a huge regional victory and major upset of #1 A&M, I wouldn’t call it a break-through for the program. LSU went to the college World Series in back to back years in 1986-1987, so it made the 3rd CWS appearance for Skip and the LSU baseball program.

I had just finished my sophomore year at LSU. Listened to it huddled around a car radio with friends in the Applebee's parking lot.

I don’t think you understand. We played A&M in a 2004 super regional and won. A&M upset Rice to go to the regional.

I was 5 rows above the A&M dugout. There were frat guys witjh McDonalds Bags on there heads sitting a few rows down in front of me. Ben gave up a homer for the lead off hitter, after that he settled down for the rest of the game. Didn’t take long for those bags to come off their heads.

Maybe we should get Ben to talk to the team and fire them up.
