My family has vacant land that has become the target of scammers in MS. The property has been listed for sale twice in the last month by legit, local realtors scammed by someone fraudulently representing themselves as the owners.

Is there a way to report this property as a scam target on the MLS and note that it is in fact, not for sale?

Are there any state agencies we should report to in MS? FBI?

Where are you seeing it? FB Marketplace and Craigslist are chalk full of scams these days.

If you're seeing it on Zillow/Realtor etc, just contact the local realtor board.

Zillow/redfin/etc, basically any website that's pulling from the MLS, I think

Vacant property is the number 1 target in real estate scams lately. Many realtors are not doing enough due diligence.

I would think title companies/attorneys are also cupable.

A lot of these are getting caught by the title companies before they are actually sold. I’m saying that the realtors are just blindly listing some of these.

I just read about this happening up in Connecticut. Dude is suing for 2 million and the house being built on it demolished.

One simple step would be to make sure it's easy to look you up so realtors and title companies can verify the property is really for sale. Make sure the mailing address listed under your tax assessment is up to date. Most title companies have been trying to send out verification letters to those mailing addresses when they get vacant property for sale.

Maybe get to know some of the neighbors and give them your phone number so they can give you a heads up if they see a for sale sign pop up.

Thankfully no problem there. In both cars neighbors notified us within 24 hours of the sign going up. We'll see if the scammers try for round #3. I'm going to see if Zillow or realtor.com will let me set a notice if/when it "hits" the market again. Tax records are up to date. Braindead realtor listed it for half of fair value. I joked with my folks about putting up a not for sale sign on the lot.

I get calls and texts regularly asking if I want to sell a house in Baton Rouge that I have zero ownership interest in. It’s my mothers house and she lives there.

The buyers sent the money to a bank account in South Africa after the supposed owner lived in Johannesburg - if that doesn’t send up massive red flags for everyone involved, I’m not sure what would.
