I’d be interested to know if this extra $50 million comes out of the NBA owners split of revenue only or if it comes out of the players split as well.

It's $25 million per year. NBA players and owners split REVENUE evenly so the players won't foot any of the costs it seems.

quote:

The collective bargaining agreement between players and the league calls for players to receive 51% of basketball related income. The NBA withheld 15% of player salaries last season to ensure that revenue split was achieved. Revenue gains during that season mean players will ultimately retain 97.35% of their 2022-23 playing salaries, according to two people familiar with the accounting who were not authorized to speak publicly. The league will keep 2.65% of the $4.5 billion in player contracts from the 2022-23 season.

crazy that NBA players make $4.5 billion a year when this board insists noone cares about the NBA

$25 million per year for the next two seasons.

That seems high, comes out to just over $2 million per wnba team. NBA teams spend around $3 million per year each and travel a lot more in a bigger footprint.

Each NBA team plays 41 road games in a season and each wnba team plays 18 road games.

Is the NBA paying for this?

Well it isn’t coming from ticket sales, I can assure you

Imagine if my company lost $1.2 million last year and the next year I go to my boss and say I’m going to need another $5M in my budget for private flights

This is likely happening because too much of the league bitched about one team (NYC?) doing it when none of them were supposed to.

Considering they still aren’t profitable, the reasoning behind commercial over chartered was to cut overhead for all teams so they could be on an even playing field.

I could see the owners foregoing a collective $25 million over two years to do the PR thing. That’s less than a million per team and they’re savvy enough to enjoy the PR from this.

I could see the NBAPA having a problem with not receiving $25 million they were otherwise owed

It's honestly crazy they were making them fly commercial to begin with. The WNBA is a joke

Should read the NBA plans to fork over an extra $50M
I wish ESPN/Disney could somehow lose money from this move too. When they go bankrupt maybe NBC can take over their NBA and SEC coverage. Peacock could be everyone's favorite streaming platform at sometime in the future.

Upon further consideration, why would this affect the NBA players at all?

They receive half of all basketball revenue, this is an expense and shouldnt hurt total revenue. It will lower profits by $50 million if the nba is paying it, but won't reduce how much total revenue is brought in

With the money they lose they’re lucky they aren’t riding a greyhound bus.

I know four WNBA players.
Griner - because we traded a weapons dealer for her
Plum - because she has that video of her rocketing a T-shirt into the stands
Clark - because I'm breathing
Reese - because I'm on this board

But that's better than MSL

So 60k per flight (18 road games, 36 flights)

Sounds about right for a charter big enough to fit a team of their size.

Im sure they'll find a way to piss and moan about the accommodations once they start flying charter.

Every NBA player is going to see a new unexplained fee/tax appear on their paycheck. Do the math ~550 NBA players are going to foot the bill for the 50 million.
