This morning I made the decision to send my 14 year old golden retriever, Charlie, to doggie heaven. How did some of you baws deal with it? I've never experienced anything like this before and am kind of at a loss right now.

Like I deal with every emotional trauma.

I buy a pack of cigarettes, roll the windows down. Drive until I need gas and toss the pack.

Never fun. Never easy.

Just like losing a friend or anyone close to you. It’s gonna take time. Try to stay busy doing something else for now.

You really don't.

You'll start to feel normal again after a short time.

I’m 16 months removed from same fate. Can’t even think about a new dog yet. Stella was one of a kind .

Time heals all. We had our first family dog right around the time me & my siblings were born so it was a BAD deal when it passed. I thought my dad was going to need counseling. Poor guy

RIP. Any hip displasia or cancer? I have a Golden and those two are usually the prime culprits at that age.

You'll never be able to replace a family member easily.

However, I'd say get another one and take solace in the fact that you're helping a new but different one get the love it deserves

ETA: at some point, you don't have to rush into it

No cancer(at least none detected) but definitely had hip issues. That's what ultimately led me to this decision. He just couldn't get up anymore/stand for long/walk. I had been carrying him up and down stairs for years. It just took a bad turn a few days back and it felt like the right time.

DO NOT get another dog immediately. That’s bad advice.

Toughest thing I’ve ever had to do was put my little Brutus down.. I was pretty devestated. This was just a month after Ida destroyed our trailer and that made it much harder. But we still had his sister beanie so that helped some…

When we put ours down a couple of years ago, I was adamant that I didn't want another one. We had him for 15 years, and he was glued to my side. I held him when the vet put him to sleep, sobbing the entire time, thanking him for the years of happiness.
My wife and son schemed behind my back to get another one 6 months after that. best move we ever made. Another great dog (albeit somewhat nuts), who's glued to my side.
This is the only way.

I don't plan on it. I'm going to enjoy some dogless time in my life although, I wouldn't trade any of those former sacrifices for anything

The best thing you could do is to stay busy. It’s the same as losing a loved one. It will take some time and you will never actually get over it but it will get easier to deal with. I’ve had to do it twice. I had mine cremated so in a way they are still with me. In my will it stipulates that they both be buried with me

Prayers for you bud and I mean that. It was the hardest thing I have ever done when I had to put mine down last year. What has brought me peace is knowing I gave her the best life she could have ever possibly had. You got 14 years, I wish I could have gotten half of that!

For me at around month 5 without her I started only remembering the funny stuff she did or how sweet she was. Our minds help us out eventually.

I would have called someone crazy for doing something like this ^^^ a couple years ago but once you lose a dog that you truly cared about its not so crazy. Got mine cremated as well. Mostly because we were moving and no way in hell was I leaving my little girl at someone else's house.

Lost ours in Dec '21 and started to look into a new dog after the new year. We waited 6 months to get a new pup. Seems from the responses taking some time off may be best.

It could be great advice for some people. A puppy can easily mend wounds if you intend on getting another dog eventually.
