Seems like this happens a couple times a year. Remember a story of an LSU Frat guy doing the same recently to a unhoused man.

A New Orleans native accused of beating an elderly Missouri man to death inside a St. Charles Avenue hotel room pleaded guilty on Monday to manslaughter, according to court records.
Prosecutors say Martin Hurtado punched 73-year-old David Sorenson on Dec. 2, 2022, inside the older man’s room at the Club Wyndham Avenue Plaza. Sorenson died from the trauma.
New Orleans police arrested Hurtado on the scene. He was charged with second-degree murder, criminal mischief and resisting a police officer, and has remained incarcerated on $600,000 bail.

On Monday, Hurtado accepted a plea deal proffered by prosecutors that saw his second-degree murder charge amended to manslaughter and the two other charges dropped, records show. He is slated to be sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Sorenson’s wife watched as Hurtado punched him in the face, then ran for help, police reported. Paramedics found Sorenson unresponsive and transported him to a hospital, where he later died.
At his initial appearance in magistrate court, a defense attorney indicated Hurtado, who displayed cuts and abrasions to his face, had acted in self-defense when he punched Sorenson.
According to police, Sorenson and Hurtado did not know one another. Hurtado worked at Tacos & Beer, a restaurant about five blocks downriver from the hotel where he encountered Sorenson.
Sorenson, a financial advisor, lived in Wildwood, Missouri, with his wife of more than 50 years, Barbara, according to his obituary. Attempts to reach her on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Very similar to the Garrett Ward “of the state” Case. What ever happened to that guy?

BS on self defense. This is from when it happened.
quote:
Homicide Detective Miles Guirreri wrote that as a fire alarm sounded, Sorenson's wife "heard a knock on the door and when she went to open it, an unknown male entered the room, pushed her into the room and told her ‘I’m not here, don’t tell anyone I’m here.'
"Fearing for her safety, the victim’s wife ran toward the hotel bathroom, but before closing the door, she observed the male punching her husband in the face.”
Sorenson died about an hour later of blunt force injuries, the New Orleans coroner determined.
According to the affidavit, Hurtado worked at Tacos & Beer, a restaurant located about five blocks downriver from the Avenue Plaza hotel where the Sorensons were sleeping, having recently sold the RV they had used to hit up regional blues festivals. Hurtado told detectives “all he could remember was drinking at work, Tacos and Beer … but he could not remember anything after that," the document said.

Guessing self defense was a better defense than "got fricked up beyond what I could handle and killed someone"
Also guessing his lawyer explained it was a terrible defense and he should take the plea.

So zero question of guilt and the shite DA can’t get the higher conviction?

40 years for manslaughter? Seems like most get a slap on the wrist for that now a days. What would have 2nd degree got him?

Can't find anything more than a mug shot and "not much moe is known about him"
quote:
Detectives who interviewed Hurtado said he told them all he could remember was drinking at Tacos & Beer -- the restaurant where he worked just down the street from the victim’s hotel -- around 6 p.m. He told police he didn’t remember anything after that.

Or did he “punch him”?

Not sure what you’re implying here, but I believe this was proposed by Sorenson/Prosecution because the family didn’t want to relive all the details during a trial.
A 30yr old getting 40 years doesn’t seem much different than a life sentence

Tricked/forced his way in to hide from someone.
Then got into a fight with the people inside the room. Beat him to death.
