A Utah woman has been arrested and charged with murder after a friend was shot in what police said was an uncompleted suicide pact the women had reached several weeks earlier. Police documents say Heavenly Faith Garfield, 21, intended to die by suicide but was "too scared to kill herself."

Garfield was arrested Tuesday and remains jailed in Utah County on Wednesday without bail, where jail records show she faces charges of murder and discharge of a firearm. Jail records didn't list an attorney who could speak on her behalf and no charges have been filed.

A voicemail seeking comment left Wednesday with a phone number believed to belong to Garfield's mother was not immediately returned.

Garfield's father called 911 just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to report the shooting, police said. He said his daughter shot the 21-year-old victim at 10:45 a.m. as part of a suicide pact, an affidavit of probable cause says.

Family members said Garfield and the victim had been discussing the pact for several weeks, the affidavit says.

The victim's name has not been released.

CBS affiliate KUTV , citing police documents, reported that a friend of the victim told officers the victim had texted him that she "intended on committing suicide, but was too scared to kill herself." That friend also told police the victim had a suicide pact with Garfield.

Detectives on scene found a 9mm bullet near the victim's body, KUTV reported, citing police document.

That will be an interesting case.

Fun fact: you can be charged with murder but you can’t be charged with murder/suicide.

reminds me of this :

an aggie comes home to find his wife in bed with his best friend, he goes into a state of rage and pulls a gun from the dresser and puts it to his head, his wife starts starts laughing hysterically, before he pulls the trigger he looks at her and says "you think this is funny don't you? well guess what, you're next sister!"

So it was a murder/suicide pact? As in one person shot the other then was supposed to kill themselves? Or was it where they were both supposed to commit suicide and the one going second chickened out?

If option 1, that’s a pretty ingenious way to make sure it got done as if the other person chickened out, they’d be facing murder charges.

It's looking like the latter. Just from reading that

There was a case a few years ago where an elderly man shot his terminally ill wife and the gun flew out of his hand and he couldn't get to it to complete his part. He was convicted on a minlmal charge and never spent any time in prison.

Not sure if it makes a difference legally but it sounds like assisted suicide not murder.

Hold up I thought suicide pacts were like I'll off myself and you'll off yourself. This sounds more like murder

Except that it's an undercover Bama joke:

Um, that's not how suicide works. I can understand if they were both supposed to kill themselves together. But one shooting the other is murder, or I guess maybe homicide is the proper word.

But if it was suicide pact, then neither should've shot the other.

I'm confused on what was the suicide pact. Were they agreeing to shoot each other at the same time, but the victim failed to pull the trigger?

Even if that's the case, that's more of a homicide pact, and not a suicide pact.
