.38 SUPER....thoughts?

I have really taken to this round. I sold my Colt 38super because it was too nice...engraving, inlay etc... I have picked up a pristine Colt .38super 1911 Government Issue model. Why did this round not catch on? It is a 9mm bullet on steroids.

Good question. If they would have called it the 9 MAG, it would have ended up in every household. It had to be marketing error?

Wasn’t very accurate when introduced due to method of head spacing. I have a Sig 220 in .38 super that I love. It is accurate as are most newer pistols chambered for the round that space off the case mouth instead of the semi-rim.

Excellent round. I stopped carrying my .45s and switched to carrying my .38 Super when I moved to EBR because I get 1-2 more rounds per magazine and less muzzle flip. Failure to stop drills are faster with the center mass hits closer together.

Probably a big part of it.

The .38 super was developed in 1929.
People wanted the .45 AP or revolvers back then.
Had nothing to do with marketing.

The answer to a question that no one asked.

Good point. In those days bullets sucked. Diameter and momentum is what worked, or a wholeeeee lot of speed. The 38 super has neither.
Id argue that bullets weren't REALLY good till the HST showed up. That and the FBI standards pretty much sealed the fate for everything except 9mm

.38 Super is / was popular in Mexico because citizens there are barred from owning a .45.

It's probably because a standard 9mm can be just as effective with less recoil. A lot of open shooters still use 38 super in competition. It's really expensive ammo though. Just the brass is like .15c/round.

Do you belong to a cartel? They love those.

Do they actually care? Follow it? Enforce it?

Mexico doesn’t have a history of being lenient on gun law infractions.
I think the law is that civilians can’t own military calibers.

Not to high jack your thread but does anyone have a suggestion on an inexpensive but reliable 38 super gun? Would prefer not to spend 1k on a colt.

I think Rock Island Armory has some 1911s cambered in .38 super.

According to a Gun Genie, Colt, Rock Island and American Classic/Metro Arms are currently the only non-custom makers of a handgun chambered in 38 Super, but none are in stock. All are 1911's. Taurus used to make one, I believe.

Is it a solid gun?
Although I don't have an RIA, I do have a Citadel 1911 Officer's model. Citadel guns are made in The Philippines by Armscor. Armscor also makes RIA. My Citadel has been a good gun. RIA guns generally get good reviews.

The modern .38 Super is a good solid round. It was popular during the Bonnie and Clyde era and was quite good in its day.
Metallugy was not all that great then which contributed to its weaknesses. However, there are other good rounds out there than in the modern era are exceptional such as 9mm Largo (9x23).
But the limiting factor today is finding .38 super at the store. I was about to switch over 9mm Para because they are effective but when the drought hit, 45 ACP was far easier to find then 9mm.
38 Super has the problem of using small pistol primers which means your 38 Super ammo is hard to find, like 357 Magnum, or my favorite 7x25 Tokarev.
While I think 38 Super is a good round unless I had a good source for the ammo, I would stick with either a 9mm or 45ACP. 38 Super was mostly a police round back in the Bonnie and Clyde days.
