We're looking at going in mid-June, from Louisiana. We could go to Destin or Gulf Shores like usual, but while we have the opportunity, we want to go somewhere far and different.

Any recommendations on what part of the city to go, stay away from, preferred pub type bars, attractions like zoo, etc.? We'll do probably a couple evenings at the beach, some tourism one day, some shopping or downtown sightseeing another.

We're probably going to rent a car, FWIW, so ubering isn't an obstacle.

First off, you’re cutting it close. Are there places available? With a 1 year old I’d stay in Kiawah (best private beach in SC) and do a couple of day trips to Charleston. We go 2X a year from North Carolina.

Charleston is an outdoor place for sightseeing and history. June will be hot, especially for a 1 year old.

No zoo but an adequate aquarium.
Downtown is all walkable
The plantations are away a little and will need transportation.
King St downtown is kind of the shopping area
Beaches don't compare to Destin area. IMO.

I used Turo to pick up and drop off the truck at CHS. It was a breeze and cheaper than Avis or Enterprise.

June will be miserably hot. I went last year at the beginning of July and it was tough.

Things to do:
The Battery
Charles Town Landing
The Citadel
College of Charleston
Shem Creek
Folly Beach/Island of Palms/Sullivan's Island
The Hunley Sub
Middleton Plantation
Boone Hall
Aquarium
The Alley
USS Yorktown
King Street
Ghost Tour
Carriage Tour
Evening Boat cruise (surprisingly, the boat cruise we went on had the best She-Crab soup while I was in CHS.

Places to eat:
Nico's (highly recommend)
Rodney Scott BBQ
Okra Grill
Oak Steakhouse
Halls Chophouse (highly recommend)
The Boathouse
Millers All Day
Fig
Poogan's Porch (highly recommend for brunch)

Thank you all for the help. I'm much aware June is not cold, but who wants to go to a beach-type place when it's cold? Ha. After all, Florida beaches shouldn't be any cooler at the same time, right?

That's also why I'm looking at as earlier a date as possible, and we have found some affordable air bnb's. But after talking with the wife some more, she now feels more comfortable on a cruise than flying with the baby. We shall see. But I'll keep this information handy because I'd still like to go up one day.

It is a beautiful and romantic city. Consider it for an anniversary trip.

Kiawah will be about a 45 minute trip one way to Charleston with the potential to be longer based on the time of day. So my recommendation would be to stay closer to Charleston...if you must be on a beach Folly or Sullivan's would be the more convenient option, and each of those has more bars/restaurants than Kiawah anyway.

You will be paying a massive premium to be that close to town (even Kiawah will be outrageous). So if you're looking for a beach vacation you'd save a bunch of money just doing that and avoiding the Charleston area completely.

I didn't mind the heat last June. I liked it.

Charleston doesn't get Retard Hot like NOLA, June is a good month. Sounds like OP has changed his plans so I won't type out my manifesto of things to do.

Charleston is nice but it’s not really a beach destination. If you’re looking for a beach vacation, go to the AL coast or FL panhandle

My choice would be to go to Sea Island, Georgia and stay at the King and the Prince. It's got a great pool area right on the beach. The downtown area is not far away and it has a quite a few really good restaurants and old time bars. The bar at the King and the Prince is really good too. Fly into Jacksonville or Savannah. It's about a 45-55 minute drive from either airport.

The cool thing about Charleston is that there is far more than just beach. Wtf else you gonna do in Gulf shores? Especially with a one year old - they can't just stay at the beach all day.

The beaches are also very different and so many to choose from- huge tidal variations, awesome marsh scenery
