You can take back roads from royal gorge up to cripple creek. Old mining town that now has casinos. Then road into Colorado Springs. Also in Canon city, drive Skyline Drive.

Cottonwood Pass, the second highest paved mountain pass in America, is one of my favorite drives in that area.
It used to be hard packed dirt road on one side of the pass.

Twin Lakes is a few miles outside Leadville and there are cabins on the lake for rent. If you are planning on being around Leadville I would check that out. We stayed there in the winter though when the lake was frozen. It has to be awesome in July.

Pick any of Ouray, Telluride, Durango, Pagosa Springs. Travel the Million Dollar Highway, stop in Silverton for half a day, Mesa Verde National Park, rent a jeep or SxS and ride Stony Pass, Cinnamon Pass, etc trails, ride the gondola in Telluride. Plenty of fly fishing guides in the same area.

GotG is a cool drive. If you can make it out west then Ouray is pretty awesome. Someone else said Telluride which is another great place to hang out.
Durango and Pagosa are way further south but still worth a visit one day.
From FairPlay, you can drive down to Sand Dunes National Park
ETA. If you’re a South Park guy, you can go to South Park brewery and check out the little town.

Salida is a really cool town. We had lunch there on our way to Grand Junction. Wish we could have spent some more time there.
If you are going to Garden or the Gods I recommend hitting up Red Leg Brewery. It was created by some Army dudes. Very good beers and some cool food trucks. Also some pretty nice views. Also those houses or whatever that are built inside the mountains are worth checking out if you have time.

. I would drive the peak to peak trail and stop in the mountain towns. I can't across a reopened ghost town on the top of a mountain. It was really cool.
Stayed in a 130 year old inn in another town.

Gold Hill, Nederland, black hawk. Canon City, central city (casinos), cripple creek.
These are all on the road between the numbers and Royal Gorge. I hit them up taking a two day drive between the two.

This has been an interesting thread. OP says they aren’t ambitious hikers then everyone tells them to not only hike a 14er but do several in a day. OP is staying in FairPlay and people tell him to go to Ouray, Telluride, and Durango, check out how long of a day trip that’d be. I guess if the OP is willing to do that then the Moab suggestion doesn’t seem that stupid other than going there in July.

Aspen is probably the nicest town if you can afford it. The one thing about Aspen that makes it so expensive is that there is almost NO fast food or chain restaurants. Nearly all of the restaurants and grocery stores there are mom-and-pop owned

Salida is great, that’s where I live.
There’s a ton of great mountain biking right out of town with good places to rent bikes. Lots of good hiking as well, if that’s more your speed. Return back to salida after your ride and there’s several breweries and good restaurants to check out.
You can rent atvs, 4 wheelers, and ride in a lot of different places in the valley. I think y’all would have the most fun at a place called Four Mile, just north of Buena Vista.
If Hancock pass is open, usually around July 4th, that’s great alpine riding. Visit ghost town of st elmo, do the atv’ing and then soak at mt Princeton hot springs afterwards.
There’s also other great sections to raft along the Arkansas river if that interests you. Numbers is more intense than Browns Canyon, which is what y’all probably did last year.

Damn, so you mean if they just let McDonalds in the Roaring Fork Valley would be affordable?

The last time I was there we went to Gray and Torrey's summer trailhead and there was an abandoned gold mine that you could go into a little ways but the views were awesome. Make sure you have some off-road capability in order to make it up the trail. I took my Suburban up the trail just fine.

Yep Massive and Elbert are both fairly easy day hikes
