I would save yourself a ton of trouble and run a cable and place another AP in the vicinity of the wireless. What do the building risers look like? Are the closets secured? Place an access point as high in the building as you can get it--as close to the device as you can.

Honestly, Excel wouldn't be the right tool to do this, in my opinion. VLOOKUPs would be tedious and the sort has to be correct, or the formulas will provide the wrong result. You could import each spreadsheet/tab into Access and query any way you want.

If you're doing business with state or local government, they still use them nearly exclusively for signed documents. They're secure and transmissions are protected by federal law--and all that implies.
Hospitals and doctors offices use them as a wrapper around HIPPA protections.
