Steve Young’s team that won the Natty against Michigan. Beat #3 Pitt to start the season.

Why is this team not mentioned or compared to schools like Cincy, ucf, boise, etc.

I wasn’t alive so I have no idea what that team was.

Well, they beat Bo Schembechler's worst Michigan team ever. So, that doesn't help.

That Pitt team ended up 3-7-1.

Steve Young was not on the 1984 BYU Cougars. His senior year was 1983.

Their schedule was absolute dog water, it was atrocious.

Nobody else finished undefeated though, that’s why they gave it to them

BYU’s opponents finished with a record of 61-85-3.

Because it was 40 years ago and a modern day G5 team with a comparable schedule rightfully wouldn't get close to a national title.

Makes some of the undefeated non-P5 teams of recent years look more appealing:

quote:

A number of pollsters and coaches were reluctant to name the Cougars as national champion, partly because they believed BYU's schedule was too weak. Only two of BYU's opponents won at least seven games. They had played only one ranked opponent all season, preseason #3 Pittsburgh, a team that would finish 3–7–1 and unranked.

Washington was the best team in the country that year, imo.

They won the Holiday Bowl, which was the tie-in for WAC champions and BYU had played in it literally every year it had existed. Michigan was 6-4 and unranked coming in.

They were the only undefeated team left. They had contractual obligations that forced them into the crappy bowl. They pretty much won it by default. There just wasn't anyone else clear. At that time there was no championship system whatsoever. No alliance, bcs or playoffs. Just conferences tied to bowls and bowls giving invites where they please, and writers voting for it. That's why it's mythical. "National Champions" just meant something different then

Because they shouldn't have been the National Champs. Any other team in the top 15 would have probably beaten them. They get matched up vs 6-5 (pre bowl) Michigan.

Washington was the best team if you look at the body of work. Their only loss was to USC on the road. Unfortunately. USC wins the Pac tiebreaker even with their loss to UCLA.

Washington also beat Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Florida has an argument too, rolling to 9 straight wins after starting 0-1-1. Florida was sanctioned before the bowls though.

Unlike today's Alabama which has only had two undefeated seasons under Saban...

It was huge back then to have gone undefeated no matter who you played.

Saban isn't winning all these Nattys in the 80s or 90s.

BCS, playoffs, changed everything and teams get mulligans and mass media pimping.

At least our 2017 team went 4-0 against teams that finished in the Top 25. Beat 8 teams with 7+ wins.

BYU’s beat 0 teams that finished ranked and only 2 teams with 7+ wins.

The writers boxed themselves in. They had BYU #1 going into the bowl games. Back then, if you were #1 and won your bowl game, you were voted #1 in the final polls.
This is what happens when you don't downvote teams when they barely beat shitty teams.

I’ve watched quite a few older games on YouTube and the 1984 games were interesting. Along with a wild year of top ranked losses, the media was NOT silent on the BYU situation. ABC literally had an 8 or 900 number set up for viewers on Saturdays to call and cast their vote on whether or not BYU deserves the number one spot. I want to say that happened in multiple weeks. Doubt that ever happened before, or since… until the internet age.

The current system will never give us teams or stories like BYU and they want examples like that out of your memory so they’re never talked about.

I blame OU for losing to Washington. They win that and they are National Champions.

Back when being undefeated was the only thing that mattered I guess. Washington should be blamed though since they could've played them in the Holiday Bowl but declined.
And that Pitt team finished with a losing record.
