80-94 or so were the golden years of lsu basketball
The 1986 final four run is top 3 of all lsu fandom experience for me.
My age, listening to it all go down on wwl 870 while at the camp hunting turkeys, the whole deal, beat Kentucky after loosing to them 3 times (all loses were tight games) it was just amazing run.

Yeah I was going to mention Randy’s injury definitely contributed as part of the downfall.

Brown was an idiot and did shite like this all the time. Had he not caused a scene it’s likely Shaq doesn’t get suspended. The Kentucky vultures were out in full force, suspending players “for leaving the bench” who were already on the court. Brown opened the door for Kentucky.. errr the SEC to do what they do and screw is over.

I agree, but brown had to do something the SEC office at the time was totally controlled by Alabama and the Kentucky factions.

Anyone remember this?

Yes. Remember when it happened. IIRC I was watching the game at Hatcher hall when they were dorms.

ETA: what led up to this was the hack a shaq approach to defending shaq. Hack-a-shaq started in college.

bullshite. Kentucky was their next opponent and Shaq was getting suspended whether Brown came on the court or not. Can't blame Shaq for finally blowing up. It was happening all season. LSU would have easily beaten Kentucky and got a high seed in the NCAA tournament. Instead, the NCAA screwed LSU on the seeding and we had to play Indiana in the 2nd round.

LSU lost at Arkansas the final regular season game because Shaq was thrown to the ground in the final seconds and no foul was called. LSU would have won the SEC had a foul been called.

You don’t know that, Brown insured it by creating a fiasco over a non violent foul. Shaq wasn’t hurt he was frustrated but Brown going after Groves erased all chance of talking to the refs and defending Shaqs reaction. It also cost us a bunch of other players who basically did nothing. Just because the Arkansas foul was rough doesn’t justify crippling your team by throwing a fit over a non hard foul in a totally different game.

Yeah, Dale was doing a lot of chirping before the Tennessee game, so the outcome was predictable when it happened. I think he knew the Hack a Shaq was doing to be a killer for his team, so getting outraged and suggesting Shaq would retaliate was his way to try to counter it. To a certain extent, the threat of Shaq retaliating probably did have some effect. But with Tennessee the foul was about as easy as he got.

I know Shaq wasn’t the best FT machine but he was constantly getting hacked and that motherfricker useless POS Roy Kramer did nothing about the cries of Dale Brown.

Roy Kramer can get fricked !

Unfortunately. That was in the quarterfinals of the SEC tourney in 1992. Brown was enraged and just being an a@@.

I think it was a turning point in Brown's coaching career. He always seemed to have his emotions under control before this event. It led to Shaq being dismissed for the remainder of that game and the next game v Kentucky (which the Tigers lost). Brown just lost it, and couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag afterwards (unfortunately he hung on 5 more seasons at LSU--imagine if the Rant had existed back then)!

Yep, I remember that game well.. Carlos Groves was the Tennessee player.. he intentionally grabbed Shaq to keep him from scoring..Daddy Dale was ready to fight…I was at another game back in the day at the “Assembly center” as it was called when Dale Brown and Rick Pitino almost went to blows after LSU’s Maurice Williamson and a Kentucky player, can’t remember his name started shoving each other running down court and squared off at half court… no blows were thrown but it threw more gas on the fire in a very competitive game already… those were some great games back in the day….

That whole response was orchestrated. The Tennessee player just grabbed him at the waist.

by that point, he had been getting beaten in every game down the stretch of the season.

the foul that broke camel’s back wasn’t egregious, but it was the culmination of all of them that just finally led him to snap.
