I have 3 kids in a Mazda cx-9 and have only needed extra space a few times.

Doubt it will happen but the first thing I’d do after having kid #3 would be to go buy a minivan

The newer ones (2021 and later) are huge and have more space than the older ones. We can fit 3 adults in the 3rd row and do it often in our 23 model.
Stroller fits easily back there too. And you can fold down one half of it and really enlarge it.
However if you take 6-7 people plus luggage on long trips regularly, you may want either the XL or to get the roof rack. The XL has a few inches more 3rd row space but where it really shines is the massive amount of cargo space.

Extra points if you got the Denali
hilarious when people say this. it's a common vehicle for the upper middle class. if you can't afford an 80k vehicle, just say that rather than trying to shame people who can afford it.

The odyssey is your answer. The munchkins can’t swing open a sliding door and hit the next vehicle.

Have an Expedition and wish we got the MAX. We are upsizing this winter.

Lol at the minivan baws who always jump on these threads to try to suck others into their shame. If OP wanted a minivan, he would have started a thread about minivans.

You're not wrong, but most people who have one can't afford it.

yeah for 3 kids a Yukon or Tahoe are the only options available of all automakers in the entire world lmfao
I mentioned vans too.
The reality is they'll all be in car seats and I'll need to easily be able to get to the one in the third row.

I've looked at them and in the moment decided the regular would work for everything but trips, but I've since heard from a couple of guys (who have 3+ kids) that they wish they'd opted for the XL. Anyone have input for me here? Only one kid in the third row so I think I could fold part of that bench and get some room there. Primarily thinking about strollers, etc.
Obviously Tahoe/Suburban thoughts useful here too.

One of my kids and their spouse have a Yukon & a Yukon XL.
The Yukon XL gets used much more of the time.
They say that with their two kids and the dog that they now realize they should have two XLs.

Lots of truth here. I'm not sure if I'm super frugal or just poor, but I can't imagine spending 80k on a vehicle.
I'd have to be making close to 250k on just my salary, or have the house paid off to justify it otherwise.

Anyone opt for the Duramax or care to comment why they didn’t?
There’s seemingly a decent concern about the oil pump placement and general concern for the choice of a belt timer instead of a chain, but no real horror stories (though you’d probably expect them in 3-6 more years)

Mini vans are awesome for road trips.
Amen. My wife drove one for 14 years and was sad when it was time to move on.

Unless you're in an Expedition Max or Yukon XL/Suburban, you either have to choose Utility or 3rd row. There is no such thing as a 3rd row midsize SUV.

I know two people who have the 3.0L diesels in pickups and they both love them. Both use them for long distance travel and towing.
Concern is the placement of the belt behind the engine. Transmission has to be unbolted to replace it - so you are looking at about $800 minimum to do that (and likely closer to $1000). And you might as well service the transmission while they are under there. It’s a wet belt setup, so the replacement interval is between 150,000-200,000 miles.
For reference - it costs more to replace the timing belt on the Honda 3.5L V6 and you have to do that every 75,000 miles.
IMO the maintenance at around 150k miles is worth it for setup that is so much more efficient than their gas alternatives. I actually think the 3.0L is the best engine you can get from GM in a half ton truck or SUV. It’s not unheard of for those light diesel trucks to get 30MPG on flat highway.

Why don't the XL's have XL on the badge any more?
