We all keep saying college baseball is more competitive now than in earlier decades.

BUT..

it seems like many schools who used to be CWS competitive have fallen by the wayside (Irvine, Fullerton, Long Beach, et al) and the biggest programs are more dominant than ever.

How many Big 10 or ACC programs are contenders annually nowadays?

I think the best programs are better teams than in previous decades, but there are fewer programs who fall in that category.

I hate to be that guy, but I fricking called it. After our first game when we scored like 15 or something runs I make a thread saying Jay would win multiple championships at LSU. A lot of posters said slow your roll, this and that, nah. I fricking knew we'd hit the lotto after that game. And we have, baws. Jay Johnson will win no less than 4 natty at LSU. Probably more. Down vote away, I do not care. We have lightning in a goddamn bottle with Jay.

Agree with this completely.

I’m dead certain that in 2009 no one thought Saban could ever surpass Bear Bryant in championships.

I’m also certain that everyone said it was impossible, because college football had far more parity in 2009 than it ever had back in the 60’s & 70’s during the Bear’s reign.

I’m watching the college baseball landscape change where there’s not going to be as much parity in the future as there has been for the past 20 years. LSU and the SEC have serious advantages over other schools and areas in the country.

While it’s not probable that Jay surpasses Bertman, it’s possible that it could happen.

That's because it most certainly is.

They haven't necessarily fallen by the wayside. More teams that ever before started to care about college baseball, so their path has a lot more resistance. Maybe whitchita st has fallen.

The ACC regularly has contenders. As does the Pac 12 and Big 12. The big 10 probably doesn't even realize they have baseball teams.

Just look at the recent past national champions. You won't see the same teams over and over again. It's different teams, which goes against your entire point.

There are more teams in just the SEC alone today that are legit contenders each year than there were in the entire nation during Skips years. Skip competed with Miss St and sometimes Bama for the SEC. You can't say that today.

Who said this? Do you know what parity even is?

10 of the last 14 national champions in college football have had the name Alabama or Clemson. 12 of the last 14 have had the name Alabama, Clemson, or Georgia. Does that seem like parity to you?

17 of 20 titles between 1983 and 2002 were won by 8 schools who were either past champions or won multiple titles in the 20 year span. There were only 3 schools who won their only title in that time frame. 6 of 9 champions between 2013 and 2022 won their first and only title and 8 overall in the last 20 CWS have only one title ever. 7 schools with multiple championships historically have won 12 of the last 20. Those numbers suggest as many top programs, but more parity making it difficult to win multiple times.

So he’s gonna promise to never leave us, then take an MLB manager job only to fail and come back to lead one of our biggest rivals on an historic run? No thanks.

Besides, Magician and friends have said multiple times what a terrible coach he is. And we all know how knowledgeable they are.

That's what is comical about this post. DoubleOh is part of the magician and friends group. The OP just goes the route of Nicolastiger. He shows back up and pretends he didn't say it, and hopes people just forget. Magician just disappears.

I think Jay is going to have a very dominant run. Add in the fact that his players buy into his system helps. His recruiting is also very elite.

It will be nearly impossible to match what Bertman did, that said if there was a coach that I would bet on to do it, it is definitely Jay. Honestly over the next 3-5 years I definitely expect 1-2 more championships.

That being said, Jay can win 10 championships and Skip will always be my GOAT. Mainly because he truly built LSU vs Jay(NO OFFENSE TO HIM) inheriting some solid talent, not many guys take a job where their outfielder is Dylan Crews and the 1B is Tre Morgan.

The writing is on the wall. Jay will be the goat after the next 10-15 years, eclipsing Bertman in the same way Saban eclipsed Bear Bryant.

This kind of manic depressive thought process is why people scream to have coaches fired every bad game.

Jay will be very good here, he will produce more than one championship. But it is hard to win it all now. There are more than a handful of great programs now.

During the 80s and 90s there was a group of about 15 schools. And you could pretty much guarantee that 3/4 of the field in Omaha every year would made up of teams from that group.

Yeah, the number of top programs hasn't really gone down. It's just changed.

Not even every school in the SEC was worth a shite in the 90s. Now every program, except pretty much Mizzou, is a Super Regional threat somewhat regularly.

Yeah there always used to be series like Vandy, Georgia, etc during the 90s that you could realistically count on sweeping most years. Heck even Arkansas was horrible for much of the decade.

Most people mention the great Skip Bertman as the benchmark in college baseball (and I get it). From a college baseball historical perspective, what about the great Rod Dedeaux (New Orleans’ own) who won 11 national titles at USC? He also won 5 consecutive nattys from 1970 - 1974 and chipped in one more natty in 1978 for a whopping 6 titles in 9 years. Skip came the closest to that feat by winning an unbelievable 5 nattys in 10 years. It will be fun to watch Jay’s run with the Tigers. If Jay has a long career at LSU, the Tigers will undoubtedly take the lead for the most national championships in college baseball history.

The biggest factors for the SEC was the SECN and the amount of money brought in from the TV contracts.

Football and basketball drove the bus, but the money had to be spent somewhere. So nearly every program on nearly every SEC campus has seen a raise in standards. The SEC is on the verge of controlling football, baseball, women's basketball, gymnastics, softball, track & field, and I'm sure other sports as well.

A big reason why is the SECN and the ability for families to watch their relatives whenever they wants from any part of the country.

People in California can't even watch most Pac 12 games. You want to know why nearly every SEC baseball team has an impact player from California, that's why.

Duh!!! Can you read properly???

I said back in 2009, it was being said.

Prior to 10 of the last 14 national champions being Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia. Back in 2009, LSU & Florida were coming off 2 recent national championships. USC was in the midst of a dominant run. Texas was routinely winning 10+ games a season. Miami & Florida St were still considered elite programs.

And…. That is precisely my point. Back in 2009, it appeared to be lots of parity. Until…. There wasn’t.

Same can happen in baseball with nil and lsu & the sec dominating recruiting and signing transfers.

Believe it or not, but back in 2009 more than 50% of posters on this board thought Les miles was a better coach than Nick Saban.

I do like the comparison to Saban in the sense that he is a dominant recruiter and essentially has no other interests besides his job.

The biggest difference is in the sport that they coach. More often than not, the football team with the best talent wins the championship. This just isn't true in baseball. Ole Miss barely got into the tournament in '22. They weren't a top 30 team entering the post season, but won it all. There is no equivalent in football.
