Is that a gryphon on the side (in yellow)?
No. It’s a winged tiger…
The 76th Fighter Squadron started off as the AVF fighting the for China against Japan before the US entered WWII. After Pearl Harbor the AVG was rolled over into the US Army Air Force.

Appreciate the history lesson, very interesting. Just stopped by wiki to read a little about the AVG--fascinating story, especially the part which you referenced about them forming and training in China almost a year before Pearl Harbor. Thought the following was interesting as well:
The AVG was created by an executive order of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. He did not speak English, however, and Chennault never learned to speak Chinese. As a result, all communications between the two men were routed through Soong Mei-ling, "Madame Chiang" as she was known to Americans, and she was designated the group's "honorary commander."

If you're ever passing through Monroe the Chennault Aviation Museum seems right up your alley.

The museum is housed in the last remaining classrooms of the Selman Field Navigation School, the largest navigation school in the U.S. during WWII. The Museum honors the story of General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during WWII and how one man helped change the war in China. The bilingual “Way of a Fighter” exhibit is based on General Chennault’s book written in 1949. The museum also tells the story of how a small crop-dusting business evolved into the second largest airline in the world, Delta Airlines.

That one looks like the pink painted Warhawks.
True story, they painted them pink in north Africa.

The 76th Fighter Squadron was part of the 23rd Fighter Group, which was the name given to the AVG when they were absorbed into the USAAF. The descendants of the 23rd, the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing, are still around, flying shark-mouthed A-10s
