I was at a housewarming for a friend of mine who went to LSU, in Atlanta. The WHOLE HOUSE was watching that game. When he caught that ball I could've sworn we blew the top off that house!

Then you send out the field goal unit for the win. I seriously don’t get why everyone thinks it was such a bad call.
Go back and look at the film. It would have been three seconds on the clock if the ball hadn’t been caught.

Plus we had the clock operator. Who knew to stop the clock with one second, so we either have time to kick a FG or Auburn has to run back the kickoff.

Good god, of course no one left early that night. It was a top 25 conference night game in DV that was a one possession game throughout. I promise you people left early back then, but your boomer brain is probably too addled to remember those days accurately. As someone who had season tickets from 2001-2016, I remember many a night where the stadium was just as empty as it is now by the time the third quarter ended.

It wasn't as close as some people think it was.
I was at the game. Didn't get a good look at the catch. I couldn't tell until the officials signalled whether he caught it or not.
I went back to the hotel and still couldn't tell how he caught it. The ball seems to go through the defender. I think there was some luck involved. Byrd had his hands in the right spot, because I don't think Byrd could have seen the ball as he was catching it.
That year, I had a choice of coming to see the Auburn game or the Florida game, and I chose Auburn. I don't see how you top the Auburn game, but the Florida game was even better, tbh.

This situation was probably the best clock management we ever saw from a Miles team. Flynn knew exactly when the ball needed to be snapped for there to be time left after the play. If that ball is incomplete we are kicking a 40 yard field goal to win as time expires. Not sure how you could possibly say that was botched

The announcers and pundits after the game really drove this narrative home, when you can clearly see that if the ball was dropped there would’ve been 4 or 3 seconds left on the clock, not the 1 second which they didn’t bother to go back and change bc of the score.
Could we have missed the field goal or something gone wrong on the snap? Absolutely, but the narrative that followed that game always puzzled me.

The clock was managed perfectly. That really isn’t arguable. Byrd caught the ball, spun and fell down with :03 left. If it’s incomplete you kick the field goal.

Game of inches. If that ball was an inch or two underthrown, it hits the defender. Perfect throw, and the concentration by Byrd to haul it in with the defender in such good position was great too.
I know there's a lot of debate about how much time would've been left if that didn't work, but besides that, I remember sweating bullets the defender would turn his head and pick it off when all we needed was a FG.
I was in the student section for that one. Hell of a memory. That one and the Florida game the same year.

If it was incomplete they would have had like 3 or 4 seconds left. The clock operator was LATE stopping it

It was a perfectly thrown ball, right inti the bread basket.Possibly the best throw of Flynns career. Absolutely amazing play by both players.

I was in the student section and I t happened right in front of me. I’ll never forget when Flynn dropped back and screamed, “WTF are you doing!”. The ball left his hand and everything went to slow motion until the catch, and then everyone went nuts. The emotional rollercoaster, that Miles put us through, cost each of us 10 years of our life.

It was not an insane call, nor was it gutsy. It was a common sense call. The odds of an interception - the only negative thing that could have happened, since the release was too quick for a sack - was about 1 in 100.
The call gave you a solid chance to win the game on a TD instead of having to rely only on a FG. And if you miss you still get to try the FG. It was an obvious call.

A great moment in Tiger Stadium history. DB had his arm inside Byrd's arms which were clutching the ball. Astounding catch!

That actually should have been an INT bc the DB had the inside. If he would have looked up the ball was right there for him to catch or knock down.

To be a good receiver you have to have concentration. Doesn't matter what happens around you, if it doesn't affect the balls flight, then it doesn't affect you catching it.

Maybe I'm biased because it was my 2nd ever game in Tiger Stadium but '03 Georgia when Skyler Green caught that Touchdown was something else and nothing can really top that moment.
