Best way to handle multiple Xbox’s in the same house?

I’ve had my gamertag since 1885 it seems like. My son has taken over my old Xbox one and I’ve upgraded to the X. Without even thinking about it, I downloaded a couple new games to the nex Xbox, but on my old (or his new) gamertag or Xbox account.. now it won’t let me play if he’s on. Either one of us have to sign out if we are both on at the same time
So what should I do? Is starting another Xbox live account the only way to go? I don’t mind having to double dip on Xbox services, but if I can avoid it that would be nice. Any suggestions/help? Am I doing it wrong?

You'll have to set up a new gamertag for your son, the same one can't be active on 2 separate consoles at the same time. At least that's how it was when I upgraded from the 360 to Xbox one.

Sort of wished that I had addressed this a while ago since my son has taken over my account and has 4k hours into Destiny 2, can't exactly take that away from him.

Create a new account for you, as people said.
Use old account (son's) on your new xbox and download all games you own and then create this Xbox your "Home" Xbox. This will allow anyone logged into this Xbox able to play all games without needing your old account logged in.

That's a link to the thread from last year directly to my comment. I'll quote it below.

It's hard to visualize through text, but once you've done it the first time you'll realize how easy this actually is to do. There are YouTube videos out there if you need to see someone do it.
1. You need to log in to their XBox, make that YOUR MAIN ACCOUNT'S "home" XBox, and then sign out.
That's it. Now anyone can play the games you own on that machine while logged into whatever account they want to use. If they own games on their other accounts, they can play those on that XBOX as well.
2. From your Xbox, you simply sign in with your account. Don't make it your home. You can then play any of the games you own on that machine as long as you are signed in, and now you can all play on both machines simultaneously.
3. If your kids own any games on their own accounts you could also make YOUR XBox THEIR home XBox (and then sign then our, like in step one), so you can play those games on the XBox you actually use.
