Those were some great times to be alive. Nothing even remotely close to this would go down successfully today.
I can’t think of five artists today that are of the caliber that sang on We Are the World. Plus most modern pop stars would never set aside their egos for a project like this.

Ok, let’s fill out the roster for a new project like WATW. Nominate an artist or two. Go…

Lil Dicky's Earth was a charity song that had a ton of music people in it. It obviously wasn't anywhere near the realm of WAtW though. But it came to mind. (It's also a pretty shitty song, and I love me some LD)
Granted, I don't know who half those people are, but they are celebrities/singers/athletes/etc.

You start with Adelle probably.

A truly magnificent voice; but, WATW was USA for Africa. Only American artists included. She’s a Brit, she’s out.

This could never happen today. Too many agents, publicists, handlers, & hangers on of these singers now to get all these people in one room to do something like this.

I don’t think we have many truly great vocalists anymore. We live in the day and age of auto tune and where being able to understand the lyrics is considered a bonus.
Just look at the Motown era contribution in the WATW crowd alone. Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Smoky Robinson, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, the Pointer Sisters and the rest of the Jackson 5.
It blows my mind a bit to think of all of those iconic voices were in one place.

It seems Dylan was somewhat intimidated by the vocal abilities of the other people there. Maybe even a little embarrassed. He was so reluctant to let his voice free. He thought he was expected to sing like them when they just wanted Dylan. It was really cool and uplifting to see him ask for a life line from Stevie Wonder and how Stevie was able to get him to sing his part Dylan style. He seemed really happy and relieved after his solo was completed.

bruno mars and adele are the first two people i thought of if they were to do something similar today. adele thinks the world of bruno. but if it's just americans then sure she can be out.

We do; they just aren't famous.

All of the work that he put in to put an end to world hunger (before it was fashionable) and when he asked if he could participate in the song they told him to frick off.
That never sat right with me. Same with freaking country music leaving even a small posthumous recording of him out of their Country Roads take me home mashup they did a few years ago. When it was his freaking song.

On the contrary, we had this same scenario play out when Milton Greene needed a kidney and everyone came together perfectly.

The blind leading the blind joke was great.
I seriously loved this show. It was just a fun piece of nostalgia. I thought I knew a lot about "We are the World", being in my mid 20s when it came out, but they had so much extra stuff on tape that we never saw or knew about.
Lionel Ritchie definitely made it happen. Even though the piece was a lot about him, you could still see what he did in the tapes. There were a lot of people in the chorus that I had no idea were there.
Dylan appeared as stoned as we all thought he sounded back when the record came out.

I was reading about WAtW on Wiki after watching the doc and it said that Waylon Jennings left for a short while and came back to participate in the recording. But that's not at all how it was portrayed in the doc. Weird.
But really they'd already recorded most of the chorus parts, so it didn't really matter anyway. He was in the chorus.
