Sheryl Swoopes gets crushed for her awful Caitlin Clark criticism

Sheryl Swoopes wants everyone to slow down with the Caitlin Clark hype, and the WNBA legend has even invented her own statistics to advance her narrative.Clark is on the verge of becoming the all-time leading scorer in Division I women’s college basketball history. The Iowa star needs just 66 points to pass Kelsey Plum, who scored 3,527 points during her career at Washington. One of the things Swoopes ranted about is that Clark has played longer than Plum played, which is simply not true.
Swoopes, a four-time WNBA champion and three-time WNBA MVP, spoke at length about Clark during a recent appearance on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast, which is hosted by former NBA star Gilbert Arenas. One of the ways in which Swoopes downplayed Clark’s accomplishments is by saying a record should only be considered “legitimate” if the player breaks it in the same amount of time that the previous record holder took to set it.
That wasn’t the only completely fabricated statistic that Swoopes threw out, either. Swoopes also questioned how Clark’s game will translate to the WNBA because she said Clark will not be able to take 40 shots a game like she does now.Clark is averaging 22.3 field goal attempts per game this season and 19.7 in her collegiate career.
But wait, there’s more. Swoopes then said it makes sense that Clark dominates the competition because Clark is “a 25-year-old playing against a 20-year-old.”

quote:Plum scored her record 3,527 points over 139 games in four seasons. Clark has played 123 games and will likely break the record in the next two or three.
“Kelsey Plum set that record in four years. Well, Caitlin should have broke that record in four years,” Swoopes said. “But because there was a Covid year and another year — you know what I mean? She’s already had an extra year to break that record, so is it truly a broken record?”

Caitlin just turned 22 two weeks ago

Is Kelsey Plum not white?

I agree. It would have been a shame if that guy broke Pete's record with all the extra years. However, this looks like it's only Clark's 4th year of playing? I don't mind someone having a record in 4 years over 3 years, but the extra covid year on top of 4 is a bit too much for me.

Clark would destroy Swoopes 1 on 1 and she knows it, that’s why she’s bent out of shape over Clark

I mean, that’s factually correct.
LeBron broke the Jordan playoff scoring record on 120 less FGAs, but it took him like 30 more games. You can slice it however you want.

I’d imagine “40 shots per game” was hyperbole. She shoots more than anyone in the country.
Fwiw, I’m not sure how racially motivated any of this is/was. Kelsey Plum is white.
ETA- I’m fricking stoopid.

I don't know the history of women's basketball, but I'd imagine Clark would be hard to top as a scorer. She's pretty special.
I'm looking at her career stats and I am only seeing 4 years of playing. Am I misreading them? Looks like the OP also pointed out her games played will be less when she breaks the record.
If she returns for a 5th season to improve on her records then I would understand the complaint.

Given the shallow talent pool in the WNBA, Clark may not be shooting 40 times a game but she will be their go to weapon simply because she scores.

Yeah Clark is insane. I’m not trying to take anything away from her.

Clark couldn’t guard Swoopes in her prime. Hell Clark couldn’t even guard Alexis Morris last year.

Clark needs 66 more points in 140 shot attempts to pass Plum in fewer shot attempts, fewer games, and fewer minutes played.
If all she attempts is 2 pt shots she need only make 33 of 140 or 23.6% of her shots, significantly lower than her current career 2Pt % of 55.7% (60.1% this season). Her career 3-point percentage is 38.3% (40.1% this seasons), she would only need 22 of those.
Some people just don't understand statistics, I guess.

I wonder why she doesn’t like Clark.

No it's not. Clark is a true senior. 4 years. Four.

Country is doomed now the whites are crying racist over any little thing.

Plum married a drug-addled NFL tight end.
Clark is a creamy white Iowa girl who probably doesn't even have a tattoo.
Way too wholesome to be breaking records and such.

Doesn’t matter. I don’t care about the race of either party, but what Swoopes said is filled with outright fabrications. I’d love to know what her motivation for being so critical of Clark is.

Clark has played less games.
That’s the issue here. The stats thrown out were all wrong.

The amount of and intensity of the blatant racism from people of colour towards whites is frightening.
They literally hate us.
