RIP National Signing Day

I remember when I used to look forward to pretending like I was working on this day, but was really just refreshing the Tracker and watching announcement videos.
And, no, I'm not a boomer.
And, no, I'm not a boomer.

Let me ask you, on early signing day do you not do those things?

Time passes, things change.
It can be hard to come to grips with, and often its many of the small changes that bother us more than the large ones.
I've just now reached an age where I understand this.

I was just thinking about how I always wished I would have taken off to go downtown to the Bash or whatever it was called for signing day. They had it in the Atrium at the Belle of Baton Rouge a couple of years. I'd follow here and on Dandy Don all day long.
Now it's not anything special.

I went once. It was really boring.

Recruiting is so watered down with social media now I don’t even follow it
We sign who we sign, who cares who we don’t.
50% of every class will transfer anyway

The bash was fun as long as you got one of the tables in front of the stage. The food was good and the beer was unlimited. It was always used as an excuse to get off of work to day drink with friends and talk LSU football.

quote:We all do. But it was something special about going to the bash or having ESPN/CBS sports pulled up on your computer during work to see how your team did. It pretty much was the final event of college football for that said year. It’s why for a while it became a phenomenon compared to college basketball signing day.
Let me ask you, on early signing day do you not do those things?

Yes, I do but there are a lot of things going on in December. February (up north) is cold and dreary and that day always provided a little something to look forward to.

It's not that it's "watered down". It's that the breadth and depth of information is so vast (because of social media and increased "recruiting coverage") that there isn't much suspense like in years past.
In the 90's through the early 2000's you didn't have a ton of people covering recruiting. You didn't have social media available to give daily updates. You didn't really have many public "commitments". You knew the names of the prospects. You generally knew who LSU was recruiting. But there was always a greater level of uncertainty going into signing day...which created suspense...which created fun.
Now kids are having public commitment ceremonies. Even though they are completely irrelevant because there is literally nothing keeping him from changing that decision by signing day. And most players have already publicly committed by singing day. There's little suspense. It's just kid of a perfunctory process.

I used to love the bash but I was like 20 the first time I went.

Honestly, it’s not really the same. And it’s quite easy to see it isn’t by simply looking at the fact the Bayou Bash is no more.

The fact that espnu doesn’t even have an entire day talking about the landscape of signing day is telling. I use to leave that on all day, while doing whatever else I had to do that day. We are lucky if you get an hour long show.

Yep life is all about changes. You adapt and move along.

I made everyone, Gerry D. started it in the Field House on Campus. From there it moved, to a couple more venues. Catfish Town Atrium, Centroplex and the Casino. We always got a table. Food, Drinks, LSU Football, what’s not to like.

Same. Now, for the most part, I just wait until after spring practice when the dust settles.
