Any Louisianians (?) Store Their Bicycles Outside?

Three bikes stored inside right now.
They're in a room we don't use often, but I have designs on repurposing it into a game room.
They could still potentially be out of the way in the new room, but out of the house is probably better.
Is the humidity going to rust it to shite in a month outside? Does an uninsulated shed gain me anything over just buying a cover for them on Amazon?

A friend of ours uptown did. Later saw it as he was riding the Magazine St. bus home from work. Bus driver wouldn't stop and let him out to try to recover it. Never saw it again.

This isn’t a Louisianans primary concern leaving a bicycle outside

I’ve had several Treks over the years. Some stored outside some inside. Outside does get very dusty but if you have a cover, it’s fine. It’s just a pain for me to cover each time I ride.

Invest in a tarp.

Thanks - that's what I was hoping.
Less concerned about it getting stolen, but not a terrible call-out

My answer was going to be depends on where you live.

I lived in a LSU dorm for 2 years. I used to ride my bike to classes. My bike would be locked in a bike rack outside next to the dorm building, under a tree. It would stay outside for an entire semester or months. Nothing ever happened to it, I don't remember even applying oil on the chain.

I'd get a cover with elastic on the bottom - it should help slow down any rust, but isn't going to be the same as storing inside.
If you are a casual bike rider and not heavily invested in these bikes, storing outside with a cover is fine.

I did when I lived in New Orleans, locked away from view, hidden in a dingy shed at the end of the long driveway. Of course it got stolen

We did and now they are rust buckets

Always going to be better to store in a climate controlled area. But a "bicyclists" bike doesn't have many components on it to rust. A walmart bike could get rusty after a while though. You can always store them out for a while and observe how they are handling the elements. I'd expect the rubbery handles and seats to grow some kind of mildew after a full summer of no use to wipe it off.

Storing under a roof of any kind is a huge difference from keeping them in the rain and direct sun. We have had bikes under a porch roof for several years (at least since 2020) and I’ve literally done no maintenance on those bikes besides topping off the tires and tightening loose bolts for the wheel wells. I’ve changed one flat tire in about 7 yrs of riding bikes. Do get a bike pump and a spare tire, and check the tire pressure every couple of months; best way to get a flat tire is riding on one with low pressure.
If you do plan to keep in the rain, I would recommend getting a bike with an enclosed chain.

Kinda funny to read the OP when our bikes get treated better than our dogs and the dogs live like princes and princesses.
We even have wet weather bikes that are built and maintained differently than our dry weather bikes that most have never seen rain.

This could be a humidity issue as you suggest. Or it may be something you and your bikes need to work out on your own. If they're just being stored, and you're wondering what to do with them. . . maybe it's time you both had a talk.

6 months probably.

If you store you bike outside the legend is the boogaloo will take it, a lot faster than rust starting to form on the bike.

NO way, I spent to much for it so I hang it upside down from hooks in the garage space.

A better question would be is there anybody in louisiana who hasn't had their bike stolen?
