Checking bags?

I have TSC precheck and usually don't check bags, so I like to try getting to the security line 30-45 minutes before boarding begins. I like to have time to grab snacks and drinks before I board.

Checking bags, have family with you, early flights, etc. I like to be at the airport in line to check bags 1 to 1.5 hours before boarding.

For you, that would be getting there at 4:30, with boarding beginning at 6am.

Then definitely watch what you pack. I say you're good to hit the line at 5:00-5:15 am with not knowing NOLA TSA very well.
- Make sure to not have liquids over 3.4 ounces. That's colognes, toothpastes, lotions, etc.
-Don't pack drinks expecting to get through security.
-Be ready to take off shoes
-Remove laptops and ipads from your bags at security

The most annoying thing for most travelers is going through security and having people so confused and lost that they slow it down.

1.5 beforehand is a good rule of thumb if you are checking bags. If not an hour is all you need.

The general security line in Pittsburgh last Saturday at 6am was an hour plus. Easy. I was shocked. Precheck was like five people. Seems like it’s even more of a crapshoot these days than it used to be.

I assume you don't have pre check

if you are checking a bag I'd get there 2 hours before flight just to be safe

if you are not checking a bag I'd say 90 min

book your parking in advance at flymsy.com

Thanks. This is solid. What is pre-check? We don't have bags to check. I will do the parking pre-book now.

You get clearance with TSA to be able to go to another, generally shorter line. This is done in advance of travel, so if you’re asking what it is you don’t have it.

It’s nice to have if you travel often, but if you’re an infrequent flier like you mentioned in the OP don’t worry about it.

Without TSA pre check, Clear, checking bags, etc arriving two hours before your flight will be sufficient.

I love my loca regional airport for this one reason.

If I'm not checking a bag, I can park my car in the garage 20 minutes before boarding and still have enough time to go pee and grab a coffee for the flight.

from my experience the NOLA airport is busiest for the early flights bc they are usually the cheapest

The New Orleans airport is its busiest from 5 to 7 a.m., Mayle said, so passengers taking off on those flights should be especially cautious. 10:30 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. are also peak travel times at MSY, Mayle said.

Traveling for the holiday? Here are 5 things to know if you're flying out of MSY.

pre-flight drinks I plan to imbibe,

Cheap hack: drink most of your time pre-security. Pack a water bottle with your drink of choice in it in your carry on. Go to a pre-security coffee place and buy a cup of ice. Pour your pre-packed booze into the cup, while out of view of your airline's check in counter, and relax. Clear liquids are the least conspicuous.

If you're mixing with something carbonated, just bring an unopened bottle of tonic or soda with you so it won't foam up when you open it. Toss whatever you don't drink before you hit security. $5 of wasted booze is far superior to spending $50 on drinks after security.

If you go up the escalator by general boarding they have a less known security gate across the sky bridge thing at the Pitt airport, thats usually where I try and go through security as its usually much quicker when its open

I also never understood why Pitt has a train as it only has one stop. Excited to see the airport layout once they finish the construction thats been going on the last year or so

At 2pm today it was busy, but the AA counter was empty (even though I didn’t check a bag). I have pre-check, and although the line was long, I was through it in under 10 min.

For a 11am flight today longest I’ve ever been in MSY TSA line
Looking about 30+ minutes
I don’t have any bags and didn’t have to park so tried to time it closer but might be late for boarding

Update: that was a solid hour of tsa line I almost missed my flight if not for kindness of strangers
The new MSY looks pretty and has good food but literally everything else sucks arse

I always get to the airport at least 1 hour before boarding if not checking bags. Two hours if checking stuff.
Security can be killer and I don't have Clear.
Though at times I'll pay to shortcut Security (go through priority line) and in those cases I'll leave later.
I usually get dropped off at airport but sometimes I'll park at US park.

Wife (no pics) freaks if we aren't super early. It used to get on my nerves until I realized I just get to kick off the day drinking a little earlier.
