I’m wonder if it was a no knock warrant also. I’m guessing they started breaking in the door and he started shooting.
Which I can understand since it was around 6am, I would probably do the same thing if they didn’t announce themselves.
There’s also a lot of quietness about why they were there. A local news station did a FOIA on the warrant and they were told no.
Firefighters also used the jaws of life, so I’m guessing whatever was in his safe, is what they are looking for.

IF this is the scenario, "shootout" is a bad terminology to use.

I bet it was a stockpile of alcohol and tobacco.
We need to just rename the ATF to "The Anti-Second Amendment Gun Confiscation Unit"

I'm trying to withhold judgment till we know what they were looking for, but am strongly leaning towards:
Screw those firefighters for helping the ATF.
