Lazy rivers use 12” plus pipes to supply the water and current to the pool. Those motors are 3 phase so swap any two wires and they run in the opposite direction.

On a centrifugal, you would only run at about 70% flow rate running backwards.
Crazy to think nobody noticed the lazy river flowing backwards, and slower, with the suction as the discharge and vice versa.
Or it could have been just piped backwards.
Regardless, stupid mistake, and cost a little girl her life.
Every time I ride an elevator I have a sense of dread also. None of these devices are getting younger and the skill level in the trades is not going up.

Just surprising there's no check valve on the discharge, no one checked rotation, and the point of discharge had no grill/ grating to prevent people from sticking things in there including themselves.
