My biggest problem about the movie is that to truly “get it” you have to read excerpts of the fictional book mentioned in the film or read explanations provided by others who did. There is no way to get 100% there by what’s in the film, no matter how smart or attentive you are. On the right track, sure, but no more.

This is correct. The director's cut does a good job incorporating this. I did not really get it until that was overlayed onto the movie.
