I go back and forth with sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken. I like to order something sweet and a bit spicy. I also like to order chicken. Post your recommendations.

Basic American Chinese? Orange chicken. Sweet, fried, rich, and delicious. I also like the depth of flavor the orange provides.

But we have a few more “authentic” Chinese joints in Birmingham, so I’m going to add a few from there.

Taiwanese Pork Belly (Lu Rou Fan)

These aren’t the pics from Mr Chen’s, but they work well enough. Lu Rou Fan is braised pork belly with a rich brown sauce served with bok choy. It’s velvety, deep, and salty with a bright vinegar punch.

Shan City Chicken:

Absurdly spicy, this is a sichuan pepper chicken dish that is pretty much 1/2 peppers and 1/2 chicken. It has a peppery sauce and is best with lots of green onions and cilantro.

Salty crispy shrimp:

Get it with the tails on. Very crispy shrimp covered in cilantro and green onions. They have sweet pea leaves as a vegetable side, and it’s a perfect complement.

Now I want Chinese.

Peking duck roll. I once ordered it in a fancy Chinese restaurant in vegas. The neatly dressed server pushed out a cart with a whole roasted Peking duck in a glossy red brownish skin. He carefully sliced from the breast area and made 3 rolls with thinly sliced cucumber, scallion, and secret sauce for each of us. I enjoyed the rolls so much that I didn’t realized he pushed the cart away back into the kitchen. I remember thinking “where’s this dude going with the rest of my duck?”

Assuming regular Americanized place, egg foo young is outstanding if it's right.

Probably my go to order is Kung Pao chicken.

Are we talking about real food that you would find in China or the stuff we have here that we call “Chinese food”?

If the latter, Pepper Steak

Hot & Sour Soup every time I eat Chinese food. Usually with a couple of spring rolls as a side to help fill me up.

If getting their lunch plates, it's boneless fried chicken with the sauce and heated vegetables, fried rice and an eggroll with a glass of unsweetened tea.
