Discussion at work: Is The Masters overrated?
Posted on 4/10/24 at 7:42 am

- Being the first major of the year gives it added attention
- Same course every year
- Greens are the biggest defense so it can turn into a putting contest
- Small exclusive field compared to other majors
- restrictive viewing/access gives it a mystique it doesn’t necessarily deserve
Basically the argument being made is the people who run Augusta are marketing and promotional experts and have found a way to make an otherwise normal golf tournament into the biggest event of the year. Augusta gets credit for stuff that a lot of super high end golf courses/clubs also do.
Thoughts?

So y’all don’t know shite. Carry on
The greens and course make Augusta National a second shot golf course, not a putting contest

My biggest complaint is the field is too small and a bunch of spots are wasted on former champs and amateurs that have no shot.

Is Wimbledon overrated? Probably not. It is the pinnacle of the sport. That’s how I feel about the Masters

It is acutally somehow underrated. I can assure you that nobody that has ever been there would call it overrated, esepcially compared to other big time sporting events. The Masters is if Chic fil A and Disney merged their customer service experience and it had a super baby.
Everythign there is IMMACULATE. EVerything is clean. Everythign is nice.Concessions are affordable, no...they're ctually downright cheap. The scenery is awe inspiring.
There are a frickton of things in the world of athletics that are overrated, but The Masters most certainly is not one of them.

They began showing the entire course years ago, and it gets more TV coverage than any other major.

See, I think it is comments like this, that had the guy making the argument, the most fired up.

This was actually interesting argument. The point he made here is that the approach shot narrows the field, but basically all the guys in contention are dialed with their 2nd shots so then it becomes a putting contest between the handful of guys contending.
I made the comment, that basically every tournament turns out like that…

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for most people, especially in the US, it's the pinnacle of the sport.
So it's overrated to some, underrated to some, appropriately-rated to some. Discussing something like this one the internet is a tough scene as to be expected.

It’s pompous, and overly grandiose in its marketing spots. Golf does this patina of “class” or faux-refinement that I find bothersome. Still, their viewing audience is generally more affluent, so its marketing conforms to appeal to that demo. The commercials are for Lexus and medications, not Modelo and Monster energy (UFC).
That said, all big sporting events are “overrrated” insofar as the marketing/build up is heavy handed.
See: Kentucky Derby, Final 4, Super Bowl. It’s all business, and whatever they’re doing clearly works.
So who am I to judge. If it bothers me, that probably means I’m watching too much tv.

Whoever tried to make this argument is stupid.

The thing about ANGC is the fairways are not flat. It doesnt look like it on TV though. Even with a good drive a player is likely hitting a ball slightly above or below his feet.
Any golfer will tell you that makes it much harder.
There are some scoring holes at Augusta. But players have to be incredibly precise to even get in position.

Just to let you in on a little secret; the public likes high stakes sports.

Is anything I said untrue? Everything is nice and clean and the concessions are affordable. Pointing out how phenomenally well-run it is doesn't make it overrated.

So golf courses are just national parks for lazy suburbanites?
That’s all I get by the description of how concessions and landscaping blew your skirt up in this manner.

Umm, no? National parks are awesome too though.
