It’s a dramatic, picturesque, internationally beloved sporting event and four day holiday wrapped into one.
People who aren’t into the Masters aren’t my people

I didn't like the snobbiness most of my life and felt like it wasn't a tournament for the people. But, hearing people talk about how amazing it is to visit (with things like food prices being super cheap and you're treated well as long as you don't act like a retard) changed my mind a bit. You rarely hear someone go there and say it didn't live up to billing.
I do hate that they limit coverage, though.

Nobody cares about golf anymore now that Tiger isn’t winning

This, plus the greens are its defense.
Having played the course plus competing in another major (US Open), I can tell you the margin for error on the greens is miniscule in comparison to the other 3 major tournaments. For example, to get the ball close to a hole location at the Open, US Open or PGA, the area you need to land your approach shot in is maybe 6 yards squared. At Augusta, it's about 1 yard squared. Try to imagine landing your golf ball on a spread out napkin from 150+ yards away and that's what Augusta is like.

I used to go in the 90s when it wasn't restricted.......it was still the standard.
Tiger is the reason it has to be regulated ticket wise due to his popularity.
I went the last year it was open attendance. There were nearly 60,000 people at the course that day and it was absolutely insane. I knew a couple of members back then (they are deceased now) and they told me after that tournament they were going to cap attendance starting the next year. That decision was made before the green jacket was handed out on Sunday.

One of the greatest things ever was when they said frick you to sponsorship pressure and aired the whole fricking thing without them.
Complete frick you money.
It was easily the best sporting event I've been too. They really don't give a frick if it's aired or not.

No, it's not overrated. It's wonderful.

The greens and course make Augusta National a second shot golf course, not a putting contest.
This was actually interesting argument
Augusta like most majors hinges a lot on hitting fairways and greens. If you get into the bad stuff shite can go sideways really fast. Play straight and you have a chance.

It's gates of Hell hot.

Never got into golf. Always thought it sucked.

Course is the same, layout, pin positions are different.

It is special.
I’ve been many times and every time I see the course I’m amazed.
I think if you asked the top 100 golfers in the world which major they would prefer to win, most would pick The Masters.

The course is closed every year from Late May until October.

- Being the first major of the year gives it added attention
- Same course every year
- Greens are the biggest defense so it can turn into a putting contest
- Small exclusive field compared to other majors
You actually listed all the reasons that it is awesome!
Same GORGEOUS and interesting course. Small field of the best makes it easy to actually follow them all. Greens defense? Come on man!

Meh, weak argument.

Good.

Idiots

Neither good or bad, just depends on the field at the time. Can make for a much better tournament as well.
quote:
- restrictive viewing/access gives it a mystique it doesn’t necessarily deserve
It's viewing access is far better than any tournament in existence.

Same. You can never seem to remember just how colorful it is. How the grass is so perfectly cut. How the greens have elevations you can’t fathom from seeing on tv.
Or that the fans can be trusted if you leave your chair. Or the affordable concessions. Or the lack of phones in everyone’s hands, and people paying attention.
