SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A chick hatched at the bald eagle nest at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, but its life was cut short after “unexpected behavior” from the father.

The NCTC said in a Facebook post Tuesday that the chick hatched around 11:30 a.m. on Monday and was fed its first meal by its mother before 5 p.m. However, about two hours later, the father “seemed confused,” “was rough with the eaglet,” and “ultimately consumed the hatchling.”

The center said that although the chick’s death is “heartbreaking,” it’s not uncommon for birds of prey to attack or even eat their young and that it has been seen in other nests.

“It is best not to think of birds of prey in human terms and having human emotions. Bald eagles are naturally predatory and aggressive; that’s the only way they can survive,” the post said.

Animals kill their own young and other young all the time. Nothing new.

Are we sure it was the father? Did we do a DNA test on Maury?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, every now and then an eagle will raid a Hawk's nest and snatch a baby for lunch. However when they get back to their nest if the crying baby hawk is still alive the eagle's parental instincts will kick in and they will start feeding and caring for it.

There have been several examples of an eagle's nest with two large baby eaglets and a little hawk sitting there waiting for mom and dad to feed them.

So not unexpected?

It was probably not normal. Animals don't like to pass on defects

This type of behavior is normally seen with the live in boyfriend, not the dad.

There’s probably a food shortage. Eating the eaglet gives the dad a better chance of survival. Probably a decent chance the eaglet would’ve been mal nourished and eventually die, meanwhile taking up resources which would otherwise go to the parents. This way next mating season the 2 healthy parents will be strong enough to procreate.

Also he gets more sexy time with the mama.

Is what it is.
