CRIME
Memphis police officer shot and killed while responding to suspicious vehicle report; 1 suspect dead
By Alex Sundby

April 12, 2024 / 11:07 AM EDT / CBS News

A police officer in Memphis, Tennessee, was shot and killed when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle early Friday morning, police said. One suspect was killed and two other officers and another suspect were wounded in an exchange of gunfire during the incident, interim Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said during a news conference

The slain officer was identified as Joseph McKinney, who had been with the police department for about three years. The slain suspect was identified as an 18-year-old man.

Officers returned fire and the suspects drove away, Davis said. After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle stopped. One suspect was immediately apprehended, and the other was taken into custody nearby after fleeing the scene. They were both taken to a hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds, Davis said.

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested last month on auto theft charges and released without bond, Davis said. When he was arrested in March, the suspect had an illegally modified semiautomatic weapon, Davis said.

This is precisely why you fire until all are neutralized. Even if its 90 rounds.

I’m quite sure an over dramatic black woman will not be fainting over this.

This won’t get 1% of the national coverage as the criminal that got shot.

Or keep his arse in jail for the previous offense. How do you get no bond with an auto theft and semiauto gun charge?

States should start passing legislation that allows victims and victims families to hold public office holder personally liable for willful neglect of duty as it pertains to public safety. This officers family should have the right to personally sue the DA for his decisions to release the guy who eventually killed the officer.

Officer McKinney was 26 years old.

DA Mulroy is passing the buck in his statement:

“What we do know is that at the time of this offense, one of the suspects, Jaylen Lobley, was released in March on ROR with various conditions including reporting and curfew. This bond was granted by a Shelby County Judicial Commissioner following a hearing where our office strongly argued against lowering the bond, citing the defendant's danger to the community. Despite our arguments, the Commissioner approved the ROR bond.”

Lying bastard. Everyone knows his office pushes the no cash bail release of these thugs.

-edited to clarify no cash bail.
