IF this goes through (it likely will), you will see some of the larger neighborhoods try to set up their own neighborhood schools - especially in Orleans, Jefferson, and EBR. The courts will challenge it like crazy but I'm not sure they'll be able to do much other than delay.

You may even see smaller parishes with weird geography and long bus rides split up their districts.

It never required the city of StG with current process, but the way districts can form out of parish districts should have been changed back with Zachary district or Central district. Having to do a statewide constitutional amendment including a statewide vote for each local split is ridiculous. Crappy districts and leadership have little motivation to improve, and many parents pushing for improvement realize it’s quicker solution for their kids’ education to move to a different district or send their kids to private schools.

The crazy thing is a lot of the poor areas of NBR want to break away.

Clearly they don't understand how things are paid for.

Keep in mind, breaking apart isn't cheap. It likely leads to overall higher costs. Paying for two sets of district admins is going to cost more than one set, etc.

Some areas may be willing to invest more tax dollars into that if it means they can have a better system and avoid Catholic school tuition.

Bring it on. I'm here for it. We need better public schooling. This would probably lower the demand for private schooling in turn potentially helping the cost of it.

Either way, we are due for an overhaul in all of this. I don't know that I've seen anything else great from Landry (someone feel free to chime in), but this is good long term.

Agreed. If this happens, that will be a big win for him.

That catholic school tuition that is viewed as clearly superior is delivered at a fraction of the cost.

Good schools systems shouldn’t be assumed to be as inefficient and ineffective as the current system.

Did the state supreme court ever make a ruling?

I feel fairly certain school districts, like Central, will start lobbying the legislature to amend their districts if this bill passes. Not sure how other multi district Parishes will look but I can see all the districts in EBR attempting to do this.

Maybe I'm missing something - how would this affect current existing school districts (other than EBR)? Doesn't this just take away the requirement for a statewide vote before adding a new one?

Correct. In the past 3 years each school district in EBR besides EBR (Zachary, Central, Baker) has floated the idea of changing its school district boundaries for various reasons. There was actually a bill I think for Central's to change that Bodi ended up shelving. But I am pretty sure it would take a statewide vote to change those district lines. That would go away with this - you would just need an act of the legislature.

The reasons for changing the Zachary and Central boundaries are directly due to the metro council approving large subdivisions within those school districts which aren’t in city limits.

Chaundra Banks lost her shite when someone asked why an unincorporated area closer to Baker than Zachary should be in the Zachary ISD.

With Baker, I’m less sure.

If I were her, I wouldn’t be pissing off Jeff Landry as he is trying to remove powers from Teedy. He may decide to focus a little closer to home.

I can’t even wrap my head around the radical notion that people can organize school districts within their larger community to ensure their tax dollars are used in such a way that they can send their kids to a decent neighborhood school. That sounds racist.

There can't be that much bad blood between Broome and Landry considering he nominated her as delegate to the proposed constitutional convention.

Also curious why they didn't try to pass this legislation a long time ago. I don't think JBE was anti-St. George. He vetoed it initially after they threw in some late amendments, and signed the St. George transition bill in 2020.
