Nope, but if he needs to throw 4 innings in a 1-2 run game friday night to get us a win, then so be it. You cant tell me you trust anyone else to hold the rope in that spot.
Our bullpen ERA minus Herring is over 10. Statistically, it's HIGHLY unlikely you can hold a 2 run lead for 4 innings without Herring.
There's no way you can predetermine where Herring is going to pitch on this team.

yeah… but if he’s still there on a sunday….

We had 3 SEC wins heading into this weekend. Guess who got the win or save in all 3 wins? Until this weekend, we've lost every SEC game he didn't pitch.
Right. So coming into this weekend the only two guys that had an SEC win were Holman and Herring. So in my opinion, having each of them pitch in separate games would give us the best chance to win 2/3.

So, if you had a 1 run lead in the 7th on Fri, who are you turning it over to?
Not sure. Probably Moffett, Dutton, or Ack with a very short leash.

And, if you lost that game, and find yourself with a 1 run lead in the 7th on Saturday, who are you turning it over to?
Again, not sure, but it wouldn’t be Herring.
If you don’t have any confidence in other guys to come in and hold down a 2 run lead for 3 innings, what do you think is going to happen on Sunday when they don’t have a lead and you have to get 9 innings out of them?

That’s a completely different discussion. If you don’t use him the first two games and want to consider starting him on Sunday, fine. But that’s not saving him.

i just don’t get why we started Ack over him this weekend. I guess just because zack has started before

You’ve got to decide where you are going to pitch the other guys. I’m taking Herring with a lead on Friday. If I don’t get that opportunity, I’m taking it on Saturday. If I don’t get that, I’m throwing him on Sun probably in relief.

What would that accomplish? He pitched five innings this weekend, and they were gigantic. If we had not put him in we probably lose that game. If we had started him that game he probably would have gone five innings - Big Deal!
Herring is better used as a reliever. In this way he has a chance to save two games per week instead of just affect one as a starter.

With the inconsistency of this staff and our offense nothing is guaranteed, so I'm not saying that throwing Herring on Sunday is going to guarantee a series win. I believe that it is the best strategy at this point in the season because you have to win 2/3 every single week. It's not like the Arkansas series where the goal was to steal a single game. Winning a Friday game, then losing Saturday and Sunday vs Losing Friday and Saturday and winning on Sunday is all the same. Losing 2/3 any weekend effectively ends any chance at a postseason birth.

First of all I don’t think 2 of 3 every weekend gets it done.
And the most likely scenario (if things go the way they have) is that you’ve lost 2 games already without having thrown your best pitcher.
There is probably no right answer to this. It’s fair to say that you can’t waste Herrings innings.

It very well might not. But that’s the bare minimum to even have a chance.

Losing two games is the most likely scenario even if you do throw your best pitcher. We’ve seen that all year. This team is likely to lose most games in which Holman or Herring don’t pitch a significant amount of innings.

I don’t think there is a right answer either. At the moment I think you could put whatever rotation you want and it’s unlikely that we make the postseason. I mean hell, if we are being honest, the best way to win 2/3 might be wholestaff game 1, Jump/Herring combo game 2, Holman and whoever is left in game 3 but that’s obviously not going to happen.

Approve! He has that intangible air of confidence in his mannerisms

He should be starting period

Just imagine if Herring would have started this game. What a horrible idea that would have been…
Posted on 4/28/24 at 2:28 pm to lowhound
Sunday starter should be Herring if he wasn’t needed in the 1st two games of the weekend..
