You're not far off. My friend's socialist nephew loves to argue his stupid points with us sometimes, and he has been on a warpath for universal income. The reason why? Robots are taking over the workplace.
The socialists want the robot invasion to take over so that they can use that to justify and influence people into supporting UI. They want people to get paid for just existing so that we can all be lazy shitstains living off the government and "rich peoples'" dime.

Tractors, industrial automation, computers, etc. Are all machines that displaced millions of workers.
People acting like "robots" replacing human workers is some futuristic issue haven't been paying attention. This has been happening for a long time.

We already have this for people who are disabled. Everyone else can go to work or get focked. Worst idea ever.
