In 2018, scientists discovered something unexpected lurking aboard the International Space Station. This unexpected visitor turned out to be five strains of a multi-drug-resistant bacteria known to cause Enterobacter bugandensis. Now, though, researchers say at least 13 strains have been discovered. This means that the original strains have mutated into several new strains of bacteria never before seen on Earth.

The microbes and bacteria that live on the ISS are extremely important to ensuring that astronauts remain healthy during their service times aboard the station. And it’s because of the microgravity and increased radiation exposure that the station offers that some bacteria can often mutate into new strains never before seen on Earth.

A new study released in March looks in-depth at the new strains discovered aboard the ISS. This bacteria is an opportunistic pathogen, which means it will only cause disease in a person if they are already battling a disease or have a weakened immune system. Luckily, astronauts aboard the ISS are put through rigorous testing, so that isn’t often the case. But, as these astronauts spend more time in space, their immune systems weaken, which could give the bacteria a place to latch on.

Time to lock it all down again.. just 2 weeks until we have a better idea of what we’re dealing with.

They need to take a canister of sterilization gas up (Maybe Ethelene Oxide, which is the gas sterilant they use to sterilize medical devices), bring the astronauts home, release the gas and then after a day or two, open the valves and evacuate the gas into the vacuum of space, close the valves and flush it with air, then repeat a time or two. Will take care of the problem and they can send them back up.

Funny, the bacteria was first isolated in the pediatric unit of some hospital in Tanzania, so maybe this is an attack by Africa, protesting our failure to send any Africans to the ISS.

It’s almost like things in outer space are different from things here on earth.

A long time ago, I worked on a project with a company in Huntsville, AL. All of the guys there were former military and science lab folks. They had developed equipment, (Looked like a small jeep with a trailer of normal looking OD Green metal box covered stuff pulled by a vehicle) that could be backed up to the door of any place that encountered a freak viral or bacterial or germ warfare incident.

The equipment included an inflatable seal that would expand to fit and seal off the door. It had a big 10 inch hose (like a clothes dryer vent hose), attached to a closed system blower on the equipment that would pump chemical stuff they had developed from a reactor on the trailer into the building to kill absolutely everything (People, animals, insects, bacteria, and viruses) inside the building. The building would be sealed before doing this to keep the stuff from leaking out.

After a few hours of treatment, there was stuff they would pump in to neutralize the killer gas, then flush out the building. A day or so later, every thing would be gone and it would be OK to go inside. They had cool looking space suit outfits, fully sealed with air supply they would wear while doing their thing,

Some of you might remember the lab (in Maryland?) that was doing virus work (Marburg virus?) with Rhesus Monkeys and things went south and monkeys were dying like crazy from the virus. They sealed off the building and pumped stuff in that killed maybe several hundred monkeys, but got rid of the virus?

The same guys from Huntsville did the work to wipe out the virus lab, monkeys, and Marburg virus in Maryland. They could use their stuff to clean out the ISS, and any astronauts, plants, bugs, or whatever was dumb enough to stay behind when they evacuated the place.
