It’s also internally inconsistent. If one really doesn’t care what others think about him, then he wouldn’t even be able to answer that question. In other words, forming and stating that one doesn’t care what others think about him requires considering others’ thoughts about him and the effect it has on him.

It’s indeed an inherent act of self-deceit to say otherwise.
