It's not really about good or evil. The majority of people live their lives seeking various levels of Pleasure and avoiding various levels of Pain. Most of our laws are based on that majority view, along with values, culture & tradition.

The majority view of what is considered in the pleasure column may change with time (ex: slavery once good/beneficial is now abhorent) whereas some acts/behavoirs (ex: serial killing, child rape, theft, etc) will likely always be in the minority, even tho those acts bring the deviants a level of pleasure.

This. Social decision making is focusing on physical and mental pleasure and the rejection of pain. And it's the wrong dichotomy to operate on. It leads down a terrible path.

Inherently selfish for what it's worth. Not sure if good or evil is the problem.

frick you. Americans help victims of flood, famine, displaced civilians, earthquakes all over the planet.

No one else cares or has the capability to provide 1/100th of the food, medicine, shelter assistance we provide to billions of poor people.

Not saying America doesn't do a lot of good for the world but humans beings have conquered and taken other people's stuff since there the first two opposing camps emerged. This isn't a uniquely American thing.

Evil (self, over and above all) is the default position of humanity. To do “good” requires some form of self sacrifice (“good works”). Practice, in either, determines one’s proclivity for either; doing wrong makes doing wrong easier, and doing good makes doing good easier.

To play devil's advocate, I'd argue that people are born inherently good and learn from the selfish actions of others to be more selfish.

"Doing Good and Being Good" are not the same thing. According to Kant, there is no such thing as a truly unselfish act.

So long as the person without sin casts the first stone. You did read the 2nd half of the book...right?

We are all inherintly selfish, not evil. We can learn to overcome that selfishness at times. Some better than others. But we all fall short of perfection.

most people are only as good as their situation/environment allows them to be

Cut the power grid and within 2 weeks you'll find out if we're inherently evil or good.

I believe we all start out with as clean a slate as possible.

At some point, people become good or evil by choice.

Some people make the right choices and live their lives setting the best example. Others make horrible choices and are simply rotten as hell.

I don't buy into the "socio-economic, he had no choice or chance" theory. That's liberal bullshite. You ALWAYS have a choice to do what is right.

You don't have to have led a privileged childhood to know that murdering someone over their wallet is wrong. Some CHOOSE to let evil be their guide.

And they are your enemy.

Correct.

Inherently selfish vs. inherently self-giving is the correct question.

The whole point of Love, God, and reality is to learn to let go and give. TO sacrifice. Marriage, Kids, Community. And most of all God. That's what will lead to "Good." That's why love, as defined by the Church is "willing the good of another."

The road to where we are today as Americans was painted in the blood of those who opposed us.

Yes it was. That can also be said of every other people who exist. All tribes who exist today were the winners of a brutal competition for resources and life. There is nothing exceptionally bad about America. In fact, the European takeover of North America was fairly benign compared to how the Mongols, Romans, Chin, Native Americans, Sub-Saharan Africans, and Scandinavians took over.

However optimistic I might be about general human impulses, even I know it won't take nearly 2 weeks.

New Orleans was a functional city on Friday before Katrina and by Wednesday, even largely evacuated and effectively (although not declared) under martial law, it might as well have been the 1300s.
