Governor Landry pushes for use of public funds for private or home schools

Thursday the governor held town hall meetings in Metairie and Mandeville to try and drum up support for HB 745 and SB 313, bills which would lay the groundwork for Education Savings Accounts in Louisiana. “It's not the panacea to fixing our educational system,” he said, “but it is a first step.”

Many advocacy groups have expressed concern that the money could be diverted from funding that would otherwise go to public schools. Jan Moller, Executive Director of Baton Rouge-based think tank Invest in Louisiana, said he worries that public funds would be used for private schools that do not have the same transparency or testing requirements as public schools. “The public needs to know how their dollars are being spent, what results we're getting for those dollars,” he said.
He also noted that with a significant sales tax ending in 2025, the state is heading for a “fiscal cliff,” and to fund LA GATOR “you either have to raise that much money in taxes, and I don't think any politician wants to raise taxes, or you have to cut it from somewhere else in the budget,” like public schools.
Governor Landry said Thursday that the program would cost about $1.8 million to create, then at least tens of millions more to fully implement depending on how many families opted in. The bills provide for the program to be rolled out slowly, starting with students with special needs and low-income families and eventually becoming available to all families in the state.

Looking forward to seeing just how pro-choice the filth really is.
We just dealt with this in Alabama and the sky screamers were apoplectic.
Do any of your historically black private colleges get public funds? No reason, just asking.

If you want to send your kid to a Catholic or any religious school (Baptist, et al) you really should be against state money being given to your school in the form of vouchers.
If the state gives money, sooner or later they start calling the shots and being addicted to the taxpayer money makes them powerless as a prostitute dealing with their pimp. Vouchers sound good, but few think of the long term effects on religious freedom and autonomy.

This sounds great, but if there are strings attached it’s not worth it.

I pay property tax and my daughter goes to private school. Just give me back what I pay I school property tax which is about 3K a year and I’m good.
The Public School issues are not related to money. You can’t spend your way out of parents and kids not giving a shite about education. My daughter’s private school spends about 7k per year on education per student. 97% of the 2024 senior class was accepted to college and 68% had some type of scholarship.
My local public school spends 13K per year. I don’t know their stats but imagine it’s not even close.

This is a handout that too many "conservatives" on this site will support. They want their free shite too. There is no way the money will actually leave the public school and follow the student. The state will just end up paying for both.
Then the govt money will cause an uptick in tuition as govt money tends to do in these situations.

Myself and my three siblings all did 12 years of private Catholic schools, and I have no children.
So we have gotten nothing from the multiple tens of thousands of dollars my parents and I have paid in taxes that go to our government indoctrination centers, except a dumbed down public that’s barely employable and functional citizens.
Like another poster said, how about they refund us some of those taxes since we don’t use public indoc centers.
Why should I have to fund La’Shonda’s six illegitimate kids “education?”

Good. School choice is immensely popular. It's one of the most popular GOP policy planks.

Parents should have school choice . If the public schools were as good as democrats claim then they would be upset with school choice . The problem is this gets more kids out of the democrats control and weakens the democrat school unions .

I’m torn on this.
In theory I like the idea but it’s the implementation and practice that worries me. Especially in Louisiana.
But at the same time my rule of thumb is that anything the teacher’s union is against is a good thing and I’m all for it.

Fair is fair. My kids are going to private school yet I'm paying for other people's kids to go to public school at the same time. That's not right.

If you want to home school or private school your kids that is your business, but the public should not pay for it. Charter schools are public though and should receive more funding.

Correct, Louisiana private schools are held to a much higher standard than public schools.

Where's the down side?

What is your problem with private schools using public school funds? My taxes pay for this. I pay for my kids private school and your kids public schools. Why should my taxes not benefit my family but only yours?

Great work thank you Landry.

Why is it always low income who reap the benefits when they contribute nothing. Tired of propping up those folks.

Good.
And I'm not surprised that establishment educators have found school choice to be bad. They're mostly idiots protecting their jobs and industry.

I don't really have a issue with this.
The parents of these kids are tax payers. If a parent decides to home school or put their kid in private school they should be able to access the funds and amount that would go to cover their kid if they were attending a public school, no more no less. They are taxpayers also and it is only fair they should be able to access these funds.
This should apply to everyone.
