I'd put him up there.

I like recruiters and Sumlin was OU's ace for awhile.

take urban meyer: good head coach and good offensive mind. he didnt run the defense- he put someone who was smart and knew what they were doing in charge: charlie strong. seemed to work out fine

Wrong. You're speaking out of ignorance here. Urban meyer is not an offensive guy, contrary to what most people assume. His expertise is in defense and special teams. He finds a good, innovative offensive guy to run the spread offenses that he likes his teams to have. Dan Mullen was critical to UF's success on offense during much of this decade. Mullen left after the 2008 season and the UF offense's productivity went down in 2009, even though Tim Tebow was still there. They only scored like 13 points on us last year and they struggled on offense against a number of other teams as well. Then, this year Tebow leaves and the UF offensive struggles continue to go downhill even more. Mullen was a huge part of UF'w offensive success when he was there.

I'd give Mullen, Calhoun, Hoke and Sumlin calls if I was hiring a coach.

i would argue meyer is much, much more an offensive guy opposed to a defensive guy. id say hes a special teamer first and foremost. i agree the offense had struggled mightily since mullen left. the "like 13" points they scored on us was b/c jebow was fresh off a concussion and they ran a shell of their offense that night.

1988 Illinois State (OLBs)
1989 Illinois State (QBs/WRs)
1990–1995 Colorado State (WRs)
1996–2000 Notre Dame (WRs)

this is from urban's wiki page- so take it for what its worth- but its hard for me to believe he a defensive guy with that background. more from his wiki:
quote:

Meyer's success can be attributed to his unique offensive system, which is an offshoot of Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense, relying on short pass routes. Meyer's base offense spreads three receivers and puts the quarterback in shotgun formation. Then, he introduces motion in the backfield and turns it into an option attack, adding elements of the traditional run-oriented option offense.

gator fans, help us out. how much input did meyer have on charlie strong defenses?

hmmmm. Perhaps I stand corrected and I'm the idiot. I always heard that defense and special team were his thing at UF.I know he LOVES good special teams and he said the mistake that a lot of coaches make is not putting their best players on special teams. I guess we'll have to let some gator fans give us some input on this.

Urbz did put a lot of emphasis on special teams and I think he coached that unit, but his background is offense all the way.

I live close to Houston, watch the Coogs every chance I get...He is legit...Look at what he did with a "dead" football program in Houston, and, he recruits against Texas, A&M...those two schools avoid playing Houston, they don't want to get owned!

To be fair, Houston wasn't dead when Sumlin took over. Briles did well enough there to get the Baylor job.

I would take him if Miles leaves...and I like his ties to Texas.

There is no perfect candidate that is realistically available...

Agreed. I like somethings about Miles and dislike other things about Miles. That being said, after seeing the coaches hired this year, I'll take my chances with Miles next year.

I still like Pat Fitzgerald more than Kevin Sumlin.

Sumlin hasn't been at Houston long enough with consistent success to prove he has the "Entire Package." They were 5-7 this year without Holgorsen at OC and Keenum at QB. Definite warning signs...........

I like Sumlin. I'd have him on my "realistic" wish list...

1. Chris Peterson, Boise St. HC
2. Gary Patterson, TCU HC
3. Kevin Sumlin, Houston HC
