Having said that, since the SEC has some really good teams, could these other teams have to schedule stronger OOC games because their conference isn't as strong overall?

That's part of it. But the talent gap in baseball isn't as wide as it is in football, there are good teams everywhere.

That is part of it, but there are a lot of good teams and good conferences outside the SEC.

Little ol' Fresno State won the title in 2008.

So playing at HOME in front of 9,000 hometown fans prepares you to play on the road??
Many LSU players have said just that, especially when they play in Omaha. They have said many times they are not as intimidated as other teams by the crowd because they are used to playing in front of large crowds on a regular basis.

Losing approximately $300,000 in ticket sales (plus more from loss of concessions) is significant, regardless of what you keep saying.

Why not? You could buy a plane ticket every weekend, since money isn't that important to you.....

Yeah, I got that now. I was being tag-teamed and I lost track of who was gouging my eyes out at that time.

Do you understand what it means to go to meetings once a month with the players and coaches and hear their comments? I know you can't do that from San Fran (my favorite U.S. city, btw), but it really does provide a lot more information than most fans have about the LSU baseball team.

In that case, doesn't it bring us back to scheduling the likes of Indiana, Illinois, S. Miss, Wake Forest, Houston, Mich. St., Cal. St. Fullerton, Rice and the other teams LSU has played since PM has been here? And next year we play Michigan, Notre Dame and Air Force. Like you said, baseball is different from football. If a team just has ONE really good pitcher, it is anybody's game that day.

Keep telling yourself that. I also guess you know for a fact that NOTHING from those meetings are brought to the Rant, right?

Nah, it really doesn't.

None of those teams are the problem (except for maybe late-era Rayner Noble Houston teams, but that's a different story). It's the 2 or 3 SWAC games, or Binghamton, or Sacred Heart, or Centenary for a 3 game series. Those are the games that need to be replaced. shite, just scheduling Stetson again, instead of Holy Cross would have been better.

I know for a fact that some things from those meetings ARE brought to The Rant, especially since I am the most regular poster who does it. But that is a small fraction of what is talked about. The meetings can last a hour to an hour and a half, and I might mention just one topic that is discussed at the meeting.

Plus, sometimes Coach Mainieri will say something at a meeting and preface it with, "Please don't anyone repeat what I'm about to say outside this room." I respect his wishes when he does that.

If we have to play teams from the north or northeast, there are better options. Rhode Island, Kent St, Big East schools like when we played Villanova, more Big Ten schools like we've done.

ND went to several regional tournaments and won their baseball conference several times when PM was the head coach there. ND won the Big East tournament as recently as two years ago.

Air Force is where Mainieri started his Div. I coaching career and he feels an affinity for that school.

Michigan won the Big Ten tournament two seasons ago and also played in a regional tournament that year. The year before that Mich won a regional (defeating Vandy twice at Vandy's home regional in Nashville) and advanced to a super-regional, but lost to Oregon State, who wound up CWS champions that year.

But since you have access to the internet, I'm sure you already knew all that....

Surprisingly, I rarely ask a question. In all the meetings I've attended I've probably asked two questions.

But thanks for asking......

I hate to interrupt this junior high spat, but I tend to think that most "big time" programs do not want to play LSU OOC, no matter where it is played, but I agree that if we do a home and home we are giving up revenue for questionable benefit. The original post just does not make sense. As if our players cannot adapt to better competition. The reps will benefit us immeasurably. Flame away.

Also true. Texas A&M, for example, refuses to play us during the regular season. Or at least that was their position as recently as three years ago.

I tend to agree with your philosophy. I dont believe an extra 3 or 4 games against better baseball teams will make any difference in LSU's SEC record. There is zero empirical data to support that theory. While playing closer games may help a teams mental toughness...I would argue that getting reps and confidence for as many possible players is just as important.

Pitchers and hitters are not going to become better pitchers and hitters in a matter of a few weeks because they are facing better teams. They face pretty good hitters and pitchers in practice and scrimmage.

Now as a fan...i would like to see LSU play a CSF every single week during non-conference play because...well...it's more exciting.

And don't forget about Long Beach State, Pepperdine, Arizona State, UClA and ....well, ya know we don't play anybody.
